OHIP does cover the procedure but there are a number of hoops you have to jump thru first.

There are quite a few Canadians who have had the procedure, or are awaiting their turn or are seeing their doctor and filling out the paperwork.

The first thing you need to do is to check out the web site - clos.net and read the manual. Then you need to discuss it all with your doctor and see if your doctor will support you. Their support is very important as your doctor fills out the form applying for the funding from OHIP and they authorize all the tests and there are a lot, and they do the follow up stuff.

For OHIP to pay for the procedure you need to be obese AND have co-morbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or liver problems etc. OR you need to be starting something like that. Also joint problems, arthritis etc will help with your application. Basically the OHIP committee that reviews your application decides on a basis of - what is cheaper in the long run - paying for this operation now or supporting you thru other physical problems in the future (sorry to be so materialistic).

Read the manual and decide if you are eligible. Then talk to your doctor about all of this. Then download the application form for OHIP (type OHIP into google then search for the form for out of country operations, fill out what you can and give to your doctor to fill out (YES) on page 2 to the health problem questions. Sometimes people write cover letters to attach with their doctor's forms. Then you send the documentation to OHIP and wait.
It takes about three weeks for their reply. If they turn you down there is an appeal process and several people have been approved after the appeal process.

You also need to fill out an application for CLOS. You have obviously done the first step which is to join this group

Gastric Bypass Surgery In Ontario

If you are in the obese category for weight, then the answer to your question is "Yes". OHIP will cover all medical expenses incured to get a mini-gastric bypass operation at least. This includes the costs to have the procedure done in the US. It is the patients responsibility to find his/her own way to wherever the operation is taking place and the stay that is required afterwards for the first week (ie; the plane fare to the state and the hotel room for the week is your expense). But before OHIP will cover this expense, there are many many hoops that need to be jumped through, and you must meet a certain amount of their conditions as well in order to qualify to have it covered by OHIP.

That would be, health insurance. And very, very few health plans will cover this, as 1. it's very dangerous, from a morbidity and mortality rate, as a surgical procedure and 2. it is not a long term solution to obesity, as within 5 years of surgery, most peope are at or above their presurgery rate. In other words, it's a temporary cosmetic thing - kinda like botox on the lips. Which is why most insurers won't cover it.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.

The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.

Get started today!

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

well, it really depends on the plan. i work for harvard pilgrim health care and we are a new england based health plan and we cover bariatric surgeries if deemed medically necessary. the only time it wouldnt be covered is if the employer that you have your insurance through opts out of the benefit. insurance companies in the new england area cover pretty much anything thats medically necessary except for alternative or experimental medicine.of course you have to go through the necssary pre-requisites in order to qualify. its required by all plans for the potential candidate to endure mental and nutritinal counseling to see if they meet necessary requirements. and also a mandatory bariatric program for all inquirers at the faciltiy that you're having the surgery at. once thats all established then you're doctor can submit your final evaluations to the insurance carrier for review....hope this helps
