Are you questioning why it is important for Christians to affirm this particular doctrine, or why this particular doctrine is important?
If the former, it is important for Christians to affirm certain "orthodox" beliefs, e.g. the divinity of Christ, in order for them to be considered Christian. In other words, it is important for a Christian to affirm this because if they did not affirm this they would no longer be a Christian. If you wanted to generalize the question, you might ask why it is important for human beings to affirm the divinity of Jesus.
If the latter, the doctrine of the divinity of Christ entails that God has aligned himself in such a way with humanity that the second person of the Trinity is both God and Man simultaneously. This doctrine has implications for the meaning of human being's creation in the "image of God" as well as atonement theology.
My short answer is that for Christians, worshipping Jesus is contingent upon his divinity. Worship is only due to divine beings, and if Jesus were not divine, he would not be deserving of worship. Since the Christian tradition has always affirmed that Jesus ought to be worshipped, it has also affirmed that Jesus should be considered divine.
Huge tomes have been written on this subject. You might try reading some of the Church Father's for a more in depth answer.

extra advantageous in the Greek language is "meizon" which ability "extra advantageous" God the father is "extra advantageous" than Jesus. those statements substantiate the trinity. enable me clarify definitely the way it incredibly works. think of which you're God. Now seem down at your abdomen button. Now think of that your abdomen button is the entire universe+some. So God is extensive. Now think of understanding that there is not any way you could represent your self on your creations because of the fact of your length. Jesus is God. this is the 1st component. Jesus can do each little thing God can do. Jesus IS the God that created us. Jesus is the only type that we (or any of God's different little ones) can understand using God's length. the two are one... Now the trinity is God with the father over all, in all, to all, and by all. he's everywhere. Jesus, the father, and the Holy spirit artwork jointly as one person. The Holy Spirit is God everywhere... you could not get away God because of the fact each little thing around us is made via God and is derived from God. each little thing you spot around you became into created from no longer something. each little thing.

Because the teaching of the Christian church as summed up in the Creed of the Church is that Jesus was part of the Godhead (the only begotten son), and truly man, truly God, etc. Much of the teaching of the Church is tied up with Jesus being divine.
Now when you get right down to it, I could live with it if we discover that Jesus was just a man who rose from the dead. Or even if He were just a great teacher. But the church would consider me a heretic if I said that.

Because there is only one God and he came to earth as a man and dwelt among us and will dwell among men again, not on this earth, he will create a new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. All of the fulness of the Godhead dwelleth in Jesus bodily. It's a foundational belief of Christianity, our faith is built on this belief. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

I think for those that believe in the message of love, peace, understanding, I don't think they care about the divinity. They realize what he taught is what's important.

It is the truth.
He is the only founder of a religion who said he was God. If he was lying Christianity would have died a natural death a long time ago

Because they need someone to save them. They are victims of there own beliefs. God is not found outside until God is found inside, a simple truth they don't seem to know.

It has been proven that a man named Jesus exsisted. That He died, that He preached the word of God, and that He lived.
If Jesus was a liar, wouldn't that make everything he preached wrong. And, that would mean that murder, rape, etc... is ok.
