Is this normal I thought the babies looked at their mother. My one month old nevre looks at me while breastfeeding just straight ahead and if you talk she does not look either. She can hear though because if you make a noise she wakes up, etc. Is this normal?

her eyes also roll back into her head and go back and forth as watching a tennis game. However, I thought maybe this was her sleeping and REM even though her eyes are slightly open.

First off, one month old babies can hardly see anyway. You look like a big blur to her. My son did not look at me much at this time either, and he is normal. If this behavior continues when she is two months old, please email me. This could be a red flag for a developmental disorder and getting early help is a big deal. snowangel_az@yahoo.com

You should have noticed her looking at you at least a couple of times by now. I remember waking up in the middle of the night in the hospital when my son was only hours old, laying next to me in bed, and he was staring at me when I opened my eyes. He also gazed at me on occasion while breastfeeding... although I hear that boys don't look for as long as girls do. I noticed this to be true. My niece would stare intently at faces and my son would look and then look away. Your baby should be looking at faces... but don't panic. I'm sure everything is probably just fine... but you should mention this to your daughter's pediatrician at the next visit.

Please pay attention to this behavior and bring it up with your childs dr. Does your child react to light (sun or artificial)? Is she tracing, do her eyes shake as if watching a tennis match? If so this is something that needs to be addressd ASAP I am not a doctor, but when all the things listed above in my questions to you and the things you say your daughter is doing I found out that my daughter was blind. She was 4 mos when I found out and I wondeed that too my 1st daughter gazed into my eyes all the time while feeding and Kamari didn't that was my 1st alarm , her eyes not tracing and shaking, and her not responding to light told me what was wrong but I would not believe it until I took her to the opthomologist. Her ped. and I followed this condition until she was 4 mos and them the desicion was made to see an opthomologist. Again I AM NOT A DOCTOR AND I AM NOT TRYING TO SCARE YOU just please follow up with your childs doctor and if you feel you are not being heard find another doc.

New babies can only see items that are about 9 inches away, usually mom's face. The eye sight will improve as she grows older.

Has her sight been tested? If so then perhaps have her tested for autism. I think my daughter stared at my face during feedings or slept, she was always trying to focus on things. Best bet is to talk to her doctor to be sure that she is okay.
