am moving to Salt Lake City soon, and am getting a new car. I will be commuting to work every day in Park City, which is up the mountain and potentially very snowy. Do I need an all wheel drive vehicle, or will front wheel drive suffice? Even if front wheel drive suffices, would all wheel drive be preferable?

An AWD vehicle would be a better option, yet a front wheel drive equipped with the right snow tires can get you to where you're going quite well also. If fuel is a concern, which it is for everyone, there are plenty of AWD cars and light SUV's that enable you to select either full time or traction control drive train options.

Subaru, Audi are two manufacturers that jump out as great options for fuel efficiency, styling, handling and reliability.

Most of the time you will be okay with front wheel drive and, in the winter, snow tires - If you are simply commuting and driving in town. However, I have driven to Park City many times in the winter and have been very thankful for my 4-wheel drive. I think the majority of people that commute to Park City and live in Park City have 4-wheel drive. Also, once you get to Utah, you will find there are so many places to go and things to do that require 4-wheel drive (for example: getting to the ski resorts). If you are into the outdoors at all - I would choose 4-wheel drive.

I did survive here for 5 years with my Pontiac GrandAm - so if money is an issue, I would see how you do. There are lots of 4-wheel drive vehicles here for sale.

Good luck!

yes you are going to need at least something with front wheel drive. AWD is better but get something that you can turn the AWD off else your gas mileage will suck during the summer, due to some of the engine power going to parts that aren't needed.

Also if you get AWD instead of one that you can turn the AWD off, whenever you have one tire that needs to be replaced you have to have them all replaced or your differentials wear out prematurely.

My opinion get a 4X4 not all time AWD, some good all season tire and a pair of good tire chain or cables.
You'll especially need the cables if you just get the front wheel
for skiing and the deep snow we get every once and a while.

I would rather have 4WD than AWD. I don't like a computer controlling the drive system of my vehicle. The AWD systems Ive seen don't work worth crap. I would rather get out, turn in hubs, and reach down and pull a lever than rely on a computer to engage the system.
