From the way things currently look, a total environmental breakdown is gonna be necessary, but when that happens caring will no longer matter, just look at what is happening to the rain forests and then look at how many people still don't believe in global warming...

many people already care. To get most caring: it would take global catasptrophe and mass deaths.
