well, if you take the example of your friend asking about her hair, and you say that it looks good in spite of it being bad, then it is causing harm because she will walk under the false impression that its good, when actually it could be bad, she asked you for an honest opinion and not for flattery, and you fed her with a lie when she expected the truth. Like that even though you think something might be good, it actually is not, lies always cause harm, it causes distrust, it makes people distrust you, once you lie to a person who expected the truth from you, that person will never trust you again. And then there are lies for personal gains, as far as I can see it always does cause harm, whether it be seen as small or big. and then I agree to what others have written about the same with regard to the Bible :)

Is it really kind to let your friend walk around with horrible looking hair? Isn't it kinder to tell her so she can fix it? Is it really harmless to let her think her hair is OK while people are laughing behind her back? That lie does harm your friend and it also harms YOU spiritually. If she asked me I'd tell her that I don't like it or that I liked it better the way it was before. Or it was prettier the way it was before, or it's not a good look for her or that it makes her face look too thin or to chubby or that the old hairstyle made her look younger. Whatever the case may be.

A lie is a lie is a lie .... regardless if it harms anyone or not. To lie is to sin. Let's say my friend asks me if her hair looks bad - there are tactful ways to tell her that she needs to change it. How would it help her to allow her to walk out into public with bad hair?

Yes lying is a sin. It is one of the 10 Commandments. Always tell the truth no matter what. There are ways of telling the truth so you do not hurt peoples feelings.

if the lie REALLY doesnt hurt anyone... i m sure it is NOT a sin...

as for ur fren's hair...
are u sure? ok. she feel good when u say her hair look nice...
(but actually it really look terrible).. and she went for an interview.. and it was the bad hair that made her not getting the job... and after failed several job interviews and being jobless she loose confidence in herself.. and life in general.. and she commited suicide... or worse.. she loaded a hand-gun and start to pop-off several college kids....

You need to create your own code of ethics instead of being dictated to by someone else's inflexible notions. Are they going to live your life for you? Do you want them to? If you are trying to live with constant feelings of guilt or fear of punishment, you'll never develop the self-acceptance or courage needed to take responsibility for your own decisions, and learn from your mistakes. No-one else is in your shoes - its a disgrace that some control freaks try to micro-manage everyone else.

If your "friend" can't trust you in the "little stuff", how can she the trust you in bigger matters? isn't that harmful to your friendship?

And yes, it is a sin to lie;

Leviticus 19:11-12 11 'You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. 12 'And you shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

Soli Deo Gloria
