The article below was in our local newspaper a few months ago. I have two PCs with XP, both less than 2 years old. With XP's support extended 5 years, I will not be buying Vista until I have to.

Microsoft Extends XP Service
REDMOND, Wash. (AP) - Qn the eve of the consumer launch of its new Windows Vista- operating system Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2007) Microsoft Corp. is extending the period in which it will offer support for the previous version, Windows XP.

Consumers who own Windows XP machines already were entitled to get customer service on the software up until April 2009. That date reflects Microsoft’s policy of curtailing its support for an edition of Windows two years after a new version hits the market.

Microsoft recently said consumers who still have Windows XP running April 2009 will be entitled to five more years of “extended support.” In the extended plan, consumers will still get security fixes, but instead of free service from the Microsoft help desk, they will have to pay for most assistance.

Microsoft said the move was meant to bring the support policies for consumers in line with what businesses already have.

Vista has been available for big businesses since Nov. 30, 2006, but hits the consumer PCs market as of Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007

XP isn't going away any time soon. XP is still the most stable operating system for home PC users that Microsoft has.

As with EVERY major software release from Microsoft, nobody should rely on Vista for at least 6 months after initial public release. This will give Microsoft to take care of the most dangerous known problems and for third party vendors to develop compatible products.

The first rate non help twelve months for domicile windows XP is 2013. that does no longer propose domicile windows XP will give up to function, yet not extra updates. XP has a solid following, so distributors would desire to attain that actuality and convey utility which will artwork with it for some destiny years. i might watch for domicile windows 7 to be formally released to the popular public in the past making a decision that is going to require an investment in utility. i do no longer see Vista being an prolonged term survivor any extra than domicile windows Millenium became into. There are basically too many themes in contact.

I'd say so.

as of today there are still boxes of windows XP on the computer store shelves, at same time, if you look around, you can still find that there are stores selling windows 2000 professional, so I suppose that win xp will stay a little longer.

as of right now I have two machines, one with xp pro, and one with vista home premium, and the later one seems so sluggish compared to xp pro, is so memory hungry and needs to use the hard drive so much, to the point where sometimes the computer times out to find web pages... so, needless to say I have not found a good reason to upgrade my other "older" machine that works faster and better.

and, on top of that, the price of the upgrade to windows business that would be the one compared to xp pro, is rather expensive. So, there you have it.

XP will stay long enough so that MS can issue several patches to fix the preliminary issues with Vista. Once they have done that and they are certain as to when Longhorn will be issued they'll declare and EOL (end of life) date for supporting XP and pretty much then you'll be on your own.

XP is not being installed or sold right now. So when companies order new laptops or desktops they ghost them with their choice of OS and I know none of my clients are willing to make the switch yet. However home buyers are not so lucky, we get machines loaded with all the crap that MS demands and others - third party apps - have sued to be allowed to get installed with the base load.

If we have an old copy of XP we can trash the Vista and reload, or live with an as yet, very buggy new OS.

Yup.. In the business world it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Windows Vista is such a Pig. Until Microsoft decides to stop supporting WinXP like they did with Win98 and below a couple of years ago, I wouldn't worry about upgrading.
