I apologize in advance for the length of my answer =).
The Hebrew Scriptures do need to go. They paint God as a jealous, vindictive, warmongering, bloodthirsty deity. They advise us to beat our children with a stick and to kill our adult son if he should become a drunkard. The Hebrew Scriptures are a great example of Mankind creating God in his image, rather than the opposite. (Keep them on the shelves as the history and mythology of the ancient Hebrews, but remove them from the canon.)
And Paul has got to go. Paulianity and Christianity are two very different things. Paul is the man who said lifelong abstinence is holier than marriage. I’d say burn his writings, but perhaps they’d make an interesting case study for Freud, if anybody’s got a time machine handy.
And Revelation is pure incomprehensible gibberish. It ought to be repackaged as a trilogy with the writings of Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce and sold in the Speculation section of Borders.
So that leaves the gospels. Yes Jesus seemed to be a pretty cool person, but tragically we killed him before he could write his own book and the words that are attributed to him are confusing and contradictory. The same man who said “love thy neighbor” also said “I come not to send peace but a sword.” The same man who said “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” also said “For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother…”. Am I the only one who’s getting mixed signals here? A person could spend an entire lifetime studying this series of books and still not be able to figure it out, so obviously it does not function as a useful handbook of living for the average person. Re-package the gospels with a disclaimer advising that they were written a minimum of thirty years after Christ died, and there is no evidence that the authors even knew Jesus. Throw the Gospel of Mary back in there for good measure, and while we’re at it, toss in a copy of the Last Temptation of Christ, if only for the Peter Gabriel soundtrack.
And, uhmmmmm, yeah… now there’s nothing left, so I guess we need to contact the author and ask him to start over, keeping in mind that we’re only human, so yes, he actually DOES have to spell it all out for us. Skip the parables, use small words, and a complete list of do’s and don’ts would be GREAT. And while he’s at it, he can answer some of our BIG questions, something the current text is sorely lacking in. What actually happens after we die? How do heaven and hell work? Are we supposed to be waiting for Him to intervene or are we supposed to be creating Utopia? Which religion/denomination is HIS favorite? Love our neighbors or kill our enemies? To trinity or not to trinity? Why doesn’t health food taste as good as junk food?

Add a section of written works from Saints ...
The Old Testament spanned 1600 years from Moses to Malachai. It included historical sections (Samuel, Kings, Chronicals as well as accounts of Individuals - Esther, Jonah ...); poetic section (Psalms, proverbs, Songs) and direct prophesy (Isaiah, Daniel, Micah ...)
The New Testament spans less than 150 years. History (gospels and Acts); poetic (I Cor 13) and prophesy (Revelations), but God has been working with Christianity through the ages.
Can't we have things like:
History: first 400 year in Rome; Dark Ages
Individual accounts from Saints like St Francis, St Thomas, ...
Poetic works like classic Hymns (Amazing Grace, Rock of Ages)
Prophesy? ... we will leave any modern prophets to publish their own books, not include them into the Bible

I would delete alot of the old testament slaughter/raping/ kill the witchs stuff. I would add more rainbow type stuff like with Noahs ark add some care bears and some unicorns, this would help recruitment more all that killing is a turn off for families with children.
I would be a little more specific in Revelations so that mushroom clouds are mentioned.
I would delete all the stuff about Jesus coming back because so many people hang their hats on him coming back soon. Hes been coming back soon for hundreds of years.
Add some ninjas and karate type stuff the kids love that and you could convert some based on that alone.
Describe the Devil in more rational terms not really a destroy the world type more win the hearts and minds thru violence and imperialism. Make the Devil sort of like hey all the fun souls are here we got the best of the best. A real nationalist for Hell.

Read the book of Urantia and then ask yourself that!
The Bible pales in comparison but I would not discard the bible. It has survived this long for information and the history of God's relationship with man and man's relationship with God, as passed down by many intelligent men. I would say in that regard it was divinely inspired.

Let the Holy Scripture answer that question:
Revelation 22:18-19
18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book;
19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

you can't improve the bible... nor can you change it. the bible is the truth, it's the word of God. His promise is in that book. & why would you consider improving the one thing in this world that is actually perfect? it doesn't get any better then that. to the people reading this....For God soo loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to redeem us of our sinful nature. doesn't that mean anything to anyone these days?
if you deny jesus in front of your friends, jesus will deny you in front of the lord. may you all someday find room in your heart to let the holy spirit in.

Cut out everything before Matthew and after John. The rest is incongruous with the philosophy of Jesus. The OT and Revelations are garbage and Paul was a sleazy politician.
