I been watching it since '96, i was a big Sr. fan, when he die i just quit watching NASCAR. I started watching again in 2004, after i heard Jr. won the Daytona 500. And decided to become a Jr. fan. I would say overall my favorite season of NASCAR would be 2000 though. Sr was very great that year and finished 2nd in points. Plus lets not forget his last win at Talledega, he went from way back in the pack to win the race in a matter of a couple of laps, good times.

1998
Jeff Gordon tied Richard Pettys record for most wins in a season, 13.
He had a streak from June 14 to October 17 (4months) where he did not finish a race worst than 5 place, included in that streak were 8 wins and 5 second place finishes, on his way to his 3rd championship and second in a row.

I guess that's why there are so many Gordon haters, people got tired of a NON-SOUTHERN BOY spanking their favorite drivers every week end.

GO 24

crazbul:
I was talking about modern era
Your correct about Pettys 27 wins back in 1967, they had 48 races that year and Petty was the only driver to start all 48 races, no one else had the money to compete with him and his big $ sponsors.
He literally had no competition, I don't understand how people can say the racing was better back then, when only 2 or 3 cars had a legitimate chance to win
just my opinion

1992. Richard Petty's last season. Three drivers in the hunt on the last race with Alan Kulwicki winning by 10 points. Bill Elliott won 5 times. Also, Jeff Gordon drove in the Winston Cup for the 1st time in 1992.

Id say late 70's early-mid 80's . That was when nascar drivers weren't forced to be cookie- cutter spokesmen for the sport. When they had issues, they settled them one way or the other. There are only a couple of drivers with the "stones" to say and act how they feel.

Cale Yarborough, was one for sure, the Allisons, Darrell Waltrip wasn't scared either. With everything having to be so politically correct these days, it really takes away from the emotion these drivers really have, you say or do something that a little less than sportsman like, you get fined.

It just isn't the same

1979 I loved those big STOCK cars.I was at Bristol when SR. won his first race we actually went down and stood in victory lane with his team you could do things like that back then.We would camp outside the track for the weekend.
You could jump the fence when they weren't practicing and walk around the pits.We would run around the pits talking to the drivers and crews. We took alot of close up pictures of the drivers and their cars. They would even let us look inside the cars and the trucks which for a dew teams was just a cargo van.
One time Buddy Baker came out to our campsite and ate with us you wont find a driver doing that now.We met Dick May at a service station when he was going to the race he gave us some stp t-shirts,and banners.
We went to Darlington. That was an awesome race .D.W. and the King trading the lead over and over. They kept doing crossover in the turns. And it was Pearson's last race with the Wood bros.I wasn't happy about the Petty championship but it was amazing racing.Bring back STOCK cars.

Gordon didn't tie Richard Petty's record. Richard won 27 races in 1967,10 in a row. Forget that modern era stuff, history and records start from the beginning of Nascar. To bad racing's not racing anymore. The best year was any year before Dale Sr.( nothing but a dirty driver) was in it.

I SO totally agree with Jim H. Back in the 1980's decade, you brought you best car. It wasn't a cookie-cutter like everyone else's in todays Nascar racing....err.....Iroc racing I mean. Everyone is the same. And Nascar has a gag order restricting all the drivers of what they actually say. You never saw that back in the 1980's....it was AWESOME. It was real racing. I miss 1986 with Dale Senior and Tim Richmond. These two could race like absolutely no one today can. Richmond was always on the edge out of control.

If you don't know who Tim Richmond is, watch the Movie Days of Thunder. It's based on him and his crew chief Harry Hyde.....err.....as in the movie....Harry Hogg. Laughing. So many incidents in that movie actually happened in real life. And the Quaid brother is playing Rick Hendricks. Rick's actual first two car team was Richmond and Geoff Bodine. And I found out on a recent trip to HMS that the state trooper pulling over the hauler scene.......that it really did happen in real life. One of his crew guys said 'oh yea, that wasn't just for Hollywood....it happened on the way home from Michigan - our truck driver was rowdier than Tim was." I miss those days. Tim was a great guy and an even better driver.

For me it was the 80's and early 90's.I get a kick out of watching some of the old races on ESPN classics, seeing those old cars sliding sideways each and every lap like we do on the dirt tracks. And back then a local boy could put something together and go race with the big boys when they came to town.

1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, anything from ,71-,82.

Hey, Twain? When did Ernie win the Cup in '95 or any other year? Last I knew, '95 was Gordon's first Cup. I like & miss Ernie & all, but if you remember him winning the Cup, you're living in another world. As I recall, he spent most of the '95 season in the hospital after nearly killing himself at Michigan.

Crazbul, Dale wasn't always a dirty driver. Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DaleEarnhardt15Forever for the REAL glory days of racing. Remember after Wrangler left and they came out with the black Goodwrench car and uniform? I remember so many on radio and TV calling him "Darth Vader" in that black getup, and it seemed like he really did go to the Dark Side and get dirty to win races. But if you're in a Chevy NASCAR lets you get away with murder. Imagine if Dale had stayed in Bud Moore's Thunderbird his entire career, he would've had to stay a clean driver or NASCAR would be fining/penalizing him every race!
