"I had doubts that religion was intellectually respectable. I revolted against the emotionalism of ***** religion, the shouting and the stamping. I didn't understand it and it embarrassed me."-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most denominations of Christianity are "intellectually respectable."

A few probably are not.

"Emotionalism" can also live hand in hand with "intellectual respectability."

Humans are creatures of spirituality, emotions and intellect. There is no reason why the worship of God, our creator, should not encompass all three.

With love in Christ.

P.S. Catholics are frequently a "both" group instead of either "this" or "that."

Is Christianity (as an idea) intellectually respectable? Sure, it's complex (usually) and it has been the "stew of controversy" for a while now.
Are Christians respectable intellectuals? That's subjective.
MLK's observations were superficial. He was referring to the "***** religion" (charismatic movement) not Christianity in general.

I think that it is not. Not because of emotionality, of course, but because of the falsehood of the central tenets.

If the believer acknowledges that the belief is based on pure faith, that's a different matter, but that seems to be extremely rare.
