"Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind."

John Adams, "A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America" (1787-88)

Add this one as well:

"One day the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in the United States will tear down the artificial scaffolding of Christianity. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as His father, in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."

Ole, John was a bit crusty if I may say so. (one of my ancestors)...let me leave this with you from John himself too.

Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have... a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean the characters and conduct of their rulers

PS I couldn't help but notice that this site is somewhat religious based, it is good to know the agenda of the source.

This country is the only country in history that upon its founding made a convenant with God. It is a Christian nation my friend.

There is nothing in your quote to change that. We are in fact founded on the natural authority of the people alone ... Christian people if you will remember your history :)

Ah the quote wars...

now you will have Christians bring quotes from George Washington and Jefferson.

Then Atheists will counter with counter quotes also from Jefferson and Ben Franklin.
