Sentimentality, the fact the a tuxedo doesn't have to be adjusted for bust, waist, hips, shoulders, hemming, etc. Tuxes usually only need to be adjusted in the pants and the sleeves

Tuxedo's can cost as much if not more than a wedding gown. So considering the bridal party, Bridesmaids gowns are typically affordable but It would be hard for the Men of the bridal party to spend over $1000 for a tuxedo just to be in someone elses wedding. If it were just the groom who needed a tux, he probably wouldn't rent it, but its a lot of money to ask from others.

Sentimentality. Most women here in Japan rent their gowns, though (the typical bride wears three sets of clothes during her reception -- so does the groom for that matter). Wedding gowns can be handed down to a daughter, or it can be recycled into pillows for the bed, handkerchiefs, etc.
But there's nothing wrong with renting, if you go with a good place.
I had my gown made in Thailand -- gown plus airfare was cheaper than renting one gown in Japan. I made my own second-wedding dress, too (I only wore two dresses at my reception). There are a lot of great patterns out there, and a home-made wedding dress will generally be better made than most pre-fab wedding gowns.

I believe that most women buy because 1) so they can hand it down to their daughter, 2) because of all the alterations in a gown. However if you are not planning on keeping it forever then there is no reason you cannot rent one. Although you can sometimes find a good deal and purchase one cheaper than renting one anyways.

That's a very good question. It makes sense to rent. What can you do with a wedding gown afterwards? My daughter spent an absolute fortune on her wedding gown 18 months ago. Ivory silk. Gorgeous. But it has now been dry-cleaned and is sitting in a box. Don't know what will happen to it.

A comment on Tuxedos....they DO NOT cost $1000 unless you are getting an Armani or something. You can get a decent tux for about $150 shirt, vest/cummerbund, and tie for about another $50. a bit more (but not that much more) than a rental that has seen God-knows-what activity.

both are pretty expensive to buy and it's easier to get a dress hemmed up (and usually don't need to be elongated) or let out a little or in then it is to get a coat or pants altered to another body.
also i think women dream of one day passing on the gown to their daughter or someone special.
and it's not really super special to get a tux fromyour father who probably has quite a different body than you.
men don't really buy a tux unless they go to a lot of formal affairs and many guys i know(including finace) don't like dressing up.
where girls i know(including myself) love to!
so the man can rent a tux a few times in his life (prom, wedding, business party)
and a girl has special memories with her special dress.
plus most tuxes look basically the same but dresses are so different - the girl has 'the one' that expresses her personality and dreams.

Well it use to be that wedding gowns were passed down for the daughter to wear. I bought mine, but these days I know that if I have a daughter she would probably want to have her own. I've had friends that took their dresses and mase christening gowns out of them for their babies instead... it just all depends on how you feel about it.

You have to buy or rent wedding gowns 'cause there is a believe that it is bad luck to wear 2nd hand gowns. However, there isn't any believe to wearing 2nd, 3rd or even 4th hand Tux.

because men are cheap and why would a man wanna buy a tuxedo that he probably will never wear again.
In contrast, a woman will not rent a wedding gown because sometimes, people have honeymoon sex to fulfill fantasies of a woman in her wedding gown. sperm can actually leak into a wedding gown
