How do you know that you don't owe money if you haven't done your taxes yet? Not filing by April 17th and not requesting an extension will put you into trouble with the IRS. Believe me when I say this, file for an extension or else you'll regret procrastinating for the past 3 1/2 months.

You are legally obligated to file even if you don't owe anything. However, the penalty for late filing is based on an outstanding balance of taxes you owe.
In other words...even if you file late, in your case there would be no penalty because you don't owe any taxes.

You have to file your taxes, no matter how much you owe or are owed, unless you made less than the personal exemption ($3,300 in 2006)

Legally yes, but if you don't owe, there isn't a penalty for filing late.
