My husband saw soemthing about a recal on one type of Natural Balance dog food. I think the Vennison type. I feed her Duck type. If one is unsafe, should I be worried about the others? I started feeding her Natural Balance because it is suposed to be so healthy. I am seriously thinking about making her food myself.

There are going to be risks with anything. Even the food we buy for ourselves in the store.

In my opinion Natural Balance is handling this problem very well. It is true that the venison dog and cat foods have been recalled. They are pretty sure that it is only one batch of food, although aren't certain what happened yet. For the safety of our pets they recalled all venison food, rather than just the single batch.

They had a few reports of dogs and cats vomiting, and having some kidney issues after eating food from the one batch of the venison formula. Rather than wait months while they did testing (like Menu did), they pulled it all from the shelves. They'll figure out what happened after they've made our pets safe.

I would feel confident feeding this food to my own dogs, and I'd still recommend this food. It is a high quality kibble, and even though they had a problem, I think people should still feel confident in feeding these products. Of course if you're pet was eating the venison, which she wasn't, they should be switched to a different formula for awhile.

I am right there with you, as far as concern about dog foods. I'd say feed your dog some home cooking, do a web search to get good recipes that are balanced to a dogs needs. You could change the diet gradually and add a few spoons of pumpkin pie filling to her diet (eases digestive problems incl. when switching foods) a few times a day or more if needed, while changing.
I am thinking of doing the same thing. My dog's food, none of it has been recalled but I don't think we have heard the last of it, AND I think that until there is a definite publicised cause of what is contaminating food, for a fact, that it isn't worth the risk to feed commercial food at this point.
Some of the best products are processed in these huge plants where the companies vary the ingredients that are used, but often times common ingredients are used. I know I don't want my dogs to get sick and die before I find out whether something is wrong with the food or not.

The duck formula has not been recalled, so I would continue to feed it unless it is added to the recall list. It can be very hard on a dog's system to just switch foods. I would not make food yourself as it is very hard to make sure that the dog is getting the correct amount of nutrients.

The NB duck formula does not contain any wheat gluten, so it is not involved with the other recalled brands.

Check the label for rice protien. Apparently the rice protien is a new ingredient and its been contaminated.
