I was wondering, how many years in the past can you file or refile taxes. I think that I would get a refund if I did this, but don't know how to go about doing it. Can I refile taxes from 3 or 5 years ago? Any advice would b e greatly appreciated!

To refile the income tax return you need to file amended tax return. This amended return (1040X ) must be received within three years after the date you filed your original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

Check this link for information on filing amended return.

You can file amended returns, or file late and still get your refund, for three years, so right now back to the tax year 2004.

You can amend 2004, 2005 and 2006. The statute of limitations has expired on earlier years.
