For instance a DS or something. I have an iPod so please don't say that. Also, nothing that hasn't come out yet (iPhone).

Well, if you have $500 to spend and you don't have one already... I'd get a desktop or laptop. It's true that you won't get a top-of-the-line computer for that much, but you could get a decent one. Some options are as follows:

Dell Dimension C521 - Desktop for $359. Add a monitor for $60 and you should manage it for under $500.

Gateway 5200XL - Desktop for around $400.

Dell Latitude D400/D600 - Decent Business class laptops in the $400 - $500 range.

If you aren't interested in a computer, then I could also suggest a Digital Camera.

The Canon PowerShot A540 is a good choice for around $200, and most people don't need much more than this has to offer.

The PowerShot SD800 IS is a smaller, image stabilzed option for closer to $350. The Powershot A710 IS is also a good choice in this price range.

If you wanted to splurge on the camera, the Canon PowerShot G7 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50K are decent options.

Don't forget the Big Screen TV option! You can get various 32" TV's for right at $500 if you look hard enough. Also, if you went a little smaller, you could probably get great quality.

Lastly, you could always go the gaming route. Get yourself a Playstation 2 if you don't already have one, a Nintendo DS, and several games. PS2's are down to about $130 for a new one nowadays, and there's loads of great games whatever your taste.

Or, you could go with a combination. Get a camera AND a PS2. =)

Cheers, and happy spending!

Lots of Lottery Tickets so you can have a chance to buy something cool. If you are old enough go to Vegas. Roll the dice and get something that really is cool like a nice tv.
