There will be No significant change. The American public and government will pretend it is an isolated case.

They will for a while, and slowly it will fade. Just like what happened at all the other schools (as best I can guess.) They will appease the general public, and then they will slowly lax off. Here in OK, a jounalist with a hidden camera walked into a middle school just to see how long it would take before he was questioned. IT WAS HOURS. There is no leadership in the schools, and if it seemed weird, they assume it's too weird to be true. That is why the situation will tighten up, and slowly lax off just like after 9/11. This is a sad day, but there is no real answer, sadly. This will happen again. Sadly, it has happened how many times? Can you name all the towns that have had school shootings? Not many people can. Memory fades, and with it goes our defensive mode. How many bomb threats did VT have?

I think there will be a knee jerk reaction that will waste a lot of taxpayer money and accomplish nothing else.
Going through xray machines won't help. At any given time there are tons of students walking around campus who could be fired on without going into any building at all.
Now if one of those other students would have had a gun himself he may have been able to stop the carnage. But that is a politically incorrect thing to say.

At VT, as well as any college, I think enacting any thing would be inefficient. Mostly because of the volume of students on most college campuses and the fact that many classes start and end at the same time, it would significantly increase the amount of time taken to get to class. Also, so many things could set a detector and cause even more congestion; i.e. cell phones, iPods, tooth crowns, belt buckles, etc., etc. In order to get to class on time, a student would have to get to the building a while before class even started.
Also, this wouldn't control for people having guns outside of buildings. As easily as a person can go into a lecture hall or classroom, they could stand outside a building, wait until classes get out, and shoot students as they exit the building. It would even more of a hassle to try to prevent people from entering campus with guns. Every car entering campus would have to be stopped and searched, even if they aren't staying on campus. People getting on buses off campus to get to campus, would have to be checked.
As much as it would be great to even prevent the ability to enter campus or buildings with a gun or other weapon, doing so just isn't practical for any large university.

With all of the publicity about VA Tech, a lot came out about Columbine. Apparently there is a lot of information that is in the precess of being covered up right now about Columbine. It does make me wonder why. I hope they don't go the way of the airlines. I honestly feel it isn't the security that we have installed at the airports, I think it just hasn't been time for the terrorists to act. Security is a joke, unless you, the public, are trying to catch a plane.

I'm not sure what they really can do, they can't really change every school in the country, although they could just raise the security personnel surrounding the school in case of an emergency. I'm 17 years old and I will be graduating next year, I definitely plan on going to college and this whole incident kinda ruined it for me, I'm more worried now, also, my parents are going to be really overprotective and worried all the time when I leave, which destroys the fun feeling. It is soooooooooooo sad.......for everyone.

Hopefully, Virginia Tech will lift the ridiculous gun ban they have. It sure worked well. This madman had no problem bringing a gun in, even though it wasn't allowed.
On the other hand, no law-abiding students were able to carry guns to defend themselves. The best change that could come out of this would be for students to be allowed to carry guns so when the next madman comes around trying to kill people, they'll be able to shoot back and put a stop to it, instead of being force to barricade themselves in rooms and hope they won't be hurt.
If we really care about our college kids we'll enable them to protect themselves, and they won't have to watch helplessly as their friends are murdered. I wonder what would have happened if that madman had run into a student with a gun who was ready to fight back. He would have died like the dog he was.

more than likely, but once again, if someone wants to shoot people, they are not going through the check points, it's a false sense of security. it's a problem promoted by the media, in that potential killers see all the press and recognition. If they did not report on it 24/7 for a week at a time, I think it would fade, but thats just my opinion.

I don't think that here will be extreme measures put in place. Maybe just require a keycard for entrance into each building but colleges are supposed to be relaxed and open so that knowledge and information can be shared. I think that if colleges took drastice steps then the learning environment would be compromised.

They should have Xray machines to scan the students in and swipe cards for the doors and every classroom should have a "class gun" set next to the fire hidrants so that anyone can get to it if they need to.
