I am over here right now. I have been here for 2 years. I believe that the government would not survive. How long was WWII? How long did we have a general "govern" Japan? did Japan not have to start almost completely over? We may not have the moral high ground to have begun this war. But we did. I believe that we have to stay here until it does Completely take over on it's own....It would be disastrous if we jump ship now....Iran would see the power vacuum here and through some type of "assistance" send their troops in here to "assimilate" Iraq... Even Saudi Arabia would eye this country to bring it under it's control. There would be a HUGE vacuum here and one of the neighboring countries would move in on it. Then we would be obligated to invade to protect Iraq again because we caused it to be so weak.

It won't survive.
The nation is currently held together by a shred of potential, and the overbearing will of coalition forces.
After talking with deployed Army Nat'l Guardsmen, who have the most to lose, I'm under the impression that there are people in Iraq, the majority, who enjoy their new found freedoms, relief from tyranny, and economic/social reform that we have brought into Iraq. Unfortunately, there are not enough of these people who are willing to fight, and hold to their government, to combat those who would take everything away from them.
America lies, as you've said, in a difficult position. If you leave, you will see a partial or total collapse of the Iraqi nation as we currently know it. Which might be bad.
If you stay, you must fight not only fear, hatred, and explosives in Iraq, but you must face the naysaying of a fickle public. This is not a conventional war. We have lost one like it already, and we learned much militarily- but we learned little politically. America as a majority, today, will not suffer an extended military campaign, unless we are actually being killed.
We get three years of enthusiasm per terrorist attack. No more. Perhaps, if we truly want to shape Iraq, we need intense Iraqi cooperation, or more dead American civilians.

At this point, a complete withdrawal of US and Coalition troops would be catastrophic for Iraq and the Middle East.
If the US leaves then the power in Iraq will be virtually "up for grabs". I would anticipate an Iranian invasion. Suddenly, we would have a much larger Iranian dictatorship and terrorist, safe haven. The withdrawal would also embolden the existing terrorist cells in Iraq.
Israel, feeling threatened and abandoned, would likely strike out independently and resolutely.
Sounds like the beginning to a big fight, huh?!? Remember, all it took to spark WWI was the assassination of an Archduke.

First of all you cant base your opinion of what all Iraqis think by watching one news report. The Iraqis you see on the news are just a few Iraqis opinions. If you talk to soldiers and the Iraqis they have talked to they thank them , and truely appreciate what is being done for them. My advice dont believe ANYTHING the media says. They make a lot of stuff worse than it is, OR they dont even show what is going on. As for leaving its not a good idea right now. If we leave we will be back over there in 10-15 years, and then its our children who will have to go over there.

what part of the Iraqi people don't want us there don't you get? They have not burnt our flags enough? We are not their baby sitters. The government needs to grow a spine and stand up for itself. Since our government sets no benchmarks for them to meet, they will sit on their collective asses, continue to have the US taxpayers paying their bills and neglecting our own while they do nothing but foment further conflict. The people who are against the government are already taking over or haven't you realized that yet. If they weren't already infiltrating the government even while the "big, bad" US is there, how the F do you think a bomber was able to make it into parliament? How do you think that Muqtada Al Sadr was able to get people loyal enough to him to resign from the parliament which has fractured this already weak government. The existing government is seen as the "puppet of the West" so until we get our asses out and they start to fend for themselves, they will never get their sh*t in gear.
