I believe the product that "Old Cat Lady" may be referring to is the KENT FEED product. It is made of ground corn cobs( very small granules). We came across it by a little luck when we were buying bedding. It is a great cat litter. It does cost more then the usual brands. A little bit goes a long ways. It really is worth the price. It absorbs odors and bacteria. It is safe for your septic systems.
EDIT: Check out the website for this cat litter. www.worldsbestcatlitter.com and then go to FAQ.

I use wood pellets and yes it turns to saw dust, But I never had a kitten or nursing mother get sick from it. I just sweep it up several time a day. I use the type that is burned in a wooden stove, after they use it it smells like wood not pine sol. I have used it for 1 year. It keeps the house from smelling like urine. I haven't tried the wheat litter but know it is costly. I buy 2 40 lb bags of wood pellets a month and I have 8 litter boxes which I change daily. Good luck on your choice. Actually what you are referring to is crystal liter is very bad for male cats and kitten because it can get into the male urinary track and cause a painful blockage.

Don't worry; she'll have them inside your house, but in the spot of her choosing; just give her a box. This Mama Cat was a neighborhood cat. I fed her, while she was pregnant, & she had 5 kittens in here. I found out, though, that once the kitties began to use the litter box, she didn't want to; so, I gave her one of her very own. After she's through training her kitties, then she will try to chase them off; the 2 kitties I kept, won't be chased off, though, so Mama will come in to eat, but basically lives outside. I had all 3 fixed, so at least I won't have 10 dozen cats running around. Oh, you can get kittens spayed & neutered by the SPCA when they're only around 5 months old; it's good to get it done, early, too, cause they can go into heat by 6 months of age.

I have no personal experience with wheat or corn based litters, but I have heard that because they are food based that it can attract rodents and other critters. I also assume, that because it's food based, it can rot like any other food. I don't know for sure, however.
Clay litters are silicon based and when you breath in the dust, it can accumulate in your lungs, and the cats as well. I've heard horror stories about cats having it accumulate in their digestive tract as well, since they groom themselves so often during the day and the clay is often on their paws. And all health problems aside, they often use nasty smelling perfume to cover up box odors, which to me, can smell just as bad.
I use Feline Fresh for my cats. It's a natural by-product of the yellow pine lumber industry. Although it's pine, I can assure you it does not smell like pine sol as I cannot stand that smell. It comes in both pellet and saw dust forms, is completely safe even if ingested, has no dust, and clumps really well. Since it's completely natural, it's safe for the environment as well. The 6lb bag costs about $4 at my local pet store and lasts over a month for my two cats.

World's Best Cat Litter is made from corn and is absolutely safe for the kitten and their mother. It does clump and scooping the box is very easy. It is the most expensive litter and I think it's worth the price because of the safety issue.

I use Woody Pet sawdust pellets because I have so many boxes to clean every day. Believe it or not, it is less dusty than any of the regular litters I have used, scoopable and otherwise.
For new kittens, I use World's Best because it is made of corn and it is safe, even if they eat it...

I didn't know any litter was dangerous. I would think the only danger would come from not changing it often enough. If it becomes to odorous, a kitten might not use it either.

Yes, wheat litter is the best. Try Swheat scoop cat litter, it's clay and chemical free. It is made from wheat, there is no dust, and the wheat neutralizes the odor.

Regular clay litter- just put a small amount in pan and empty entirely each time it is used and wipe out with white vinegar on a paper towel. Litter people tell you to use 3 inches in the pan- know why- cause they sell more litter that way!
