Theres this guy that comes into the store where I work and makes stupid comments and lame unfunny jokes expecting me to laugh. He gets all upset if I dont carry on a conversation with him. I have lots of customers I have to help and I cant let someone like this person monopolize my time because it would slow down my progress and draw my help away from people who really need itIs there a polite way to get this person to leave me alone.

All he wants is someone to talk to him and play around with. He just loiters around for hours and may just buy a candy bar or something. He's not a very nice person either.

I would just shortly tell him that you have other customers to help. You don't want to be a jerk, but it's true. He should be able to recognize that. Smile politely and tell him that you have alot of people to help, and if there aren't any customers, tell him that you have some things to finish up in the back room. Or you could also do the side whisper of "my boss talked to me this morning about having long conversations with the customers, and I'm sorry, but I can't chat that much anymore". Good luck, those kinds of situations always suck!

I can understand why you would be upset by this since other customers might be miffed having to wait around. Be polite, laugh a little, but do your job: in other words, don't stop for him. To get away quickly, smile and say something like "Great---umm, do you need some (whatever you sell), because i have to catch this customer over here also..."

just hang a sign by the register and when he comes in and starts with his usual antics point at teh sign and tell him your boss imposed a no loitering policy. if you exhaust all other avenues and this guy doesnt get the hint then take him out of the store and tell him off.

When this guy starts to go into his stand-up routine, just politely tell him "I'm sorry, but my boss expects me to pay attention to my job and my other customers. I know you're trying to be nice, but you're getting me into trouble. I can't socialize with customers when I'm working."

If you have a supportive boss, maybe he/she could approach this thickhead and politely ask him to not bother you while you're "on the clock."

"People who need [your] time more."? He needs your time and your influence (that is, if you are a good influence) more than you know.
