No ban would help. The instant you open the door to any kind of limitations like this--such as banning semi-automatic handguns--you give the government a foothold to finally rid us of all firearms. Then we'll end up like England, where the criminals can get caught breaking into the same house several times in a row, but it's the victim who goes to prison for defending his home and family.
The trouble is that with anything in our society, anyone who really wants it can find a way to procure it. Drugs are illegal, but they're still rampant; no amount of finger-waving and arresting gets those off the streets. It's illegal to drink and drive, but drunk drivers still kill more people in accidents each year than gun victims. These are the risks of living in a free society.
That doesn't make it right; I say if the professors had been allowed to carry concealed, they could've stopped this kid long before he killed so many.

1 - Estimates of the number of firearms in the US range from 250 million to 350 million.
2 - At the national level, the Democrats have given up on this issue and begun running pro-gun Democrats for office again. And quite successfully, too, if the last election cycle is any example.
3 - Except for the fringe wack-job anti-gun organizations trying to bankrupt the firearms manufacturers via lawsuits (a real possibility for a fairly small $2 billion per year industry) no one else gives a rat's @ss about confiscating all firearms.
4 - For the present, the courts and Congress have beat back the worst of the wack-job anti-gun organizations' abuses; we'll have to continue our vigilance to ensure that they don't succeed in fulfilling their nutty dreams.
5 - There are now 35 shall-issue states for concealed carry. The party is over for the anti-gun crowd; they just don't know it yet.

The problem of banning guns is that only the law abiding citizens would turn in their weapons. Those who own guns for the purpose of committing crimes would be the only ones with the guns. And the criminals are usually better armed than the police.

Gotta find out where Tokolosh lives. Must be great not to have any crime or death or murder. Wonder what you have to give up to get all those goodies.
You got alot of freedom there Tokolosh? Guess it's depends on what you are used to. I feel pretty civilized being here. To each his own. Just don't push your views on me and I wont push mine on you. There are two ways to spell civilized but then I guess I am being a cowboy.Yeeee Haw"

Because anytime we try to ban something it never works anyway. Remember Prohibition?? Yeah that worked really well didn't it?? People made money by the ton giving people what they wanted. It's the same as the illegal drug trade.

It will work just as good as our ban on illegal drugs, the good guys would not have any and the bad guys all the ones they want.

Gun control and/or a total ban on them works very well in the rest of the world.
Are you cowboys so insecure that you need to carry guns around all the time?
Pretty 'civilised', isn't it?

My friend, there has never been an object or behavior in history that could be legislated away.
