I'm considering seals for my son(9)'s teeth but know that in the next 4-5 years, he will have braces put on. Can braces be put on teeth with seals on them or do they need to be removed first? I don't want to bother if they'll just need to be removed in a few years.

THIS IS NOT A SPECIFIC DENTAL CONDITION FOR THIS CHILD ONLY, SO IT SHOULD BE A STRAIGHT FORWARD ANSWER ACROSS THE BOARD. DON'T ANSWER: ASK THE DENTIST.

Thanks Dr. Albert. That's EXACTLY what I needed to know. I'd love to have my son's teeth sealed but had no idea if the braces would affect the sealants. Thanks!

HELLO,

THE STRAIGHTFORWARD ANSWER IS THAT SEALANTS HAVE NO IMPACT ON BRACES WHATSOEVER. IF ANYTHING THEY ARE HELPFUL IN PREVENTING FUTURE DECAY ON THE SEALED TEETH. AS A DENTIST WHO VALUES SEALANTS FOR ALL TEETH, I WISH ALL ADULT TEETH WERE SEALED IN GENERAL.

Sealant are placed on the occlusal or biting surface of the teeth and have no impact on braces being placed. They are used to help prevent decay by filling in the cracks of teeth where brushing is difficult.

No you don't. Seals don't get in the way of braces
