I'm 5'3", 140 pounds and 16 years old. Could I get away with switching off from eating 1300 calories one day, and then 600 the next, and keep on doing that without my metabolism slowing down?

no, 1300cal a day is too little anyway.
to be healthy try this-
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
dont try to lose more than 1-2lbs a week - its not healthy to lose more.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried - no junk food.

You can't keep dropping your caloring count without slowing your metabolism. However, you can "confuse" your metabolism by varying your calorie count from day to day. (For example: 1300 one day, 800 the next, 1300, 800...etc.)

IMPORTANT: Always remember to be eating healthy foods with lots of protein and make sure that you are eating enough fat and calories to give you the energy you need for your activities. Dietpower is a good program to use. It will even calculate your metabolism and then tell you how many calories you need to eat based on your metabolism.

Take care of your body though. Drink lots of water. Get lots of sleep. Exercise for healthy amounts of time. Believe it or not - to lose weight your body needs healthy fats - unsaturated fat. Good luck. And remember...it is about being healthy - the weight loss will come along with that!

Ok that isn't going to work, wish it could, because then i could pig out everyother day and still look great. let me help you out, take your 1300 calories and knock it down to just 1200, shouldn't be real hard, your only having to part with 100 calories. Now those 1200 calories need to be working for you, your GI tract & your metabolism aren't going to respond favorably if you consume them in one large sitting. Eat as many small meals a day as possible. This will keep your body in burn mode. drink cold water, fidget, stand during commercial breaks..little things like this keep you burning calories. do 5 or 10 squats everytime before you sit on the toilet..sounds crazy, but it adds up...next thing you know..you will be a size 4..then who cares what the person in the stall beside you thinks.

nope. consistency is key. I know you know this, but I'll say it again...eat 5 SMALL meals a day and drink lots of water. AND make sure you are working out, even if it's just walking. 600 calories a day is NOT healthy! It's about a way of life, NOT a quick fix. Be patient and do it right so it will last. Otherwise you will be fighting this battle for your ENTIRE life and it's NO FUN. So, get it under control now while you're still so very young.

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

Your body burns 11 times your weight in calories just to maintain itself (without exercise). You should eat at least that much daily.

No, your body won't adjust to what you are doing, you would either stay the same or you would gain some weight. Why don't you just figure out the amount of calories you need, and do some light work outs to stay healthy. Can I have ten points please?!

I think that would be a really drastic, unhealthy change. You should decrease it very gradually, and it should never be down to 600
Your metabolism does slow down when you're not eating enough
