I think one of the best ways to avoid being "brainwashed" or deceived by religion or anything else is to listen to what your mind and heart both tell you.
For example, some people are "brainwashed" because they are incited to some strong emotion such as hatred. This allows them to be controlled because their emotions keep them from thinking clearly.
Another example is when people listen to a logical argument and fail to listen to their conscience telling them that something doesn't feel right. Just because someone has a logical argument doesn't make them right, and failing to consider intuition or your conscience allows "brainwashing" to occur.
We can avoid becoming "brainwashed" if we use our brains and we listen to how we feel.

Because the Bible plainly states what YOU are, being a creature, and it is prayed that in time you will come to a realization.
Romans: 8:20?
For the creature was made subject to vanity,(sounds like all of these wannabe funny pretend atheists that don't have a clue that God made you that way), not willingly, but by the reason of Him who hath subjected the same in hope....
that the creature, (you), itself will be set free from it's slavery to corruption, (in other words,it's up to you). Though you are not Chosen, you may still be saved, and you may still be Chosen and just don't know it yet.
Cause something draws the Atheists to the Christian site, one does not see Christains acting like jackasses on atheist sites. Why are you here except that you know God exists?

I've been praying to get my brain washed daily for 20 years. Sadly, the crud keeps coming back. But, It's a lot cleaner than it used to be! It helps when you read God's word!
Brain washed. Geez.
More importantly, I've been soul-washed. Now that's a treat! You haven't lived until your soul is healed and given eternity-life!
Think! Seek! the truth is staring you right in the face! The heavens DECLARE the glory of God! Jesus went willingly to the cross to pay for (and declare) God's forgiveness to you.
One day, your mortal body will die and you will be given an eternal body that will not perish. Where do you want that body to go? Do you want to be sent to damnation?
Or, do you have just the slightest question in your mind that maybe Christ died for a reason? Maybe he knew something that you don't? just kinda sorta maybe? Do you think Darwin will stand up for you on judgment day and plead for you?
Seek! Think! Search!

Other than basic indoctrination given to young children by their parents, I'd say that the average adult isn't "brainwashed" by his or her religion. Brainwashing is "a forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up basic political, social, or religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas."
Not only is brainwashing forced, it also induces a person to give up what they already believe.
I know I'm not brainwashed by my religion because I chose it after years of careful consideration and study of a wide variety of religious options. I know I was not brainwashed into Christianity as a child because while my mother raised me in her church, I did not have any other belief sets to give up. My father attempted to brainwash me into atheism as a teenager and his attempts failed spectacularly. He wasn't good enough to break the fear of hell. I don't believe in god(s), so I am atheistic, but since I claim Buddhism, I don't really fall into the atheist label.

If someone askes you a question about your religion and you can answer it with your own feelings and not just repeat what you religion tells, even if you answer is different from what the religion might say. Then you can still think for yourself and your not brainwashed.

Brainwashing can occur through more than religious ideologies. One simply has to look at Hitler and Karl Marx and see that brain washing can occur within a wide scope of philosophies. Including blind adherence to popular scientific theories. It has happened more than once. And unfortunately it was many in the scientific community that put up the strongest fight. It's peoples unwillingness to even consider perhaps the are the brain swashed ones that make these questions a little hard to take seriously as much as I believe people can and have been brainwashed in certain religious environments. As much as its good to ask honest questions, we also need to ask ourselves why we ask these questions. Is it to make it easir to embrace a sinful lifestyle without the contraints of conscience.

Because I chose to accept what I read and learned..because I do not believe it out of fear but out of love....brainwashed to me meand to be in some exclusive group that shuts itself away from people..forbids its members to not talk to others of different beliefs..forbits its members not to marry anyone outside the group..forbids the reading of other material etc.
If believing something others cannt see as real means I am brainwashed..ok then I willingly accept that kind of 'brainwashing'....likewise I can say people who believe in one political party over another are brainwashed etc.

Because I was never forced in to believing in Jesus Christ, one day it just completely sprung up in my heart, also my faith was definately boosted when being by my grandpa's side everyday for 2 + years when he had cancer, and when he passed away it was the most beautiful moment in my life, because you could just feel Jesus and all the angels in that room, it's is truely a moment that I will never ever forget and a emotional sensation I can never get out of my heart.

Actually, I was brainwashed by my church. God took my filthy rebellious mind and washed it and cleansed it so that I can be a shinning light to this dark and lost world. Then He took my heart and made it anew too. So, yep, I'm a product of God and my church.

If the following belief makes me brainwashed then so be it:
Jesus commanded us to love our neighbours and forgive our enemies. Both commandments if followed would eliminate so many of the ills plaguing society today.
