It isnt your fault if the cat comes up to you and if your neighbor is an understanding person the will not care if you pet their cat. If they do get mad at you while petting their cat appologise and try to stay away from it.

c'mon
the cat is the one who comes to u
and rub her self around ya
so if there any one should be complaining
is u
besides u said u dont want to ask them
that sounds a lil that u dont know each other that well
one thing i have to tell u
ur neighbor is closer to u than ur relatives
so try to keep a good relation with them
thats outside of ur question's frame i know :)
and back to the cat
as i told u
its ok and no its not illegal to play around with the cat
pets r not a property
they cant be

I'm 99.99% postive that it's not illegal, (why I'm .01% unsure is because I don't live in Texas, and I don't know how our laws would differ from yours). I guess unless your neighbor called the authorities and asked for a restraining order against you from touching their pets that it would be illegal. I wouldn't worry about it, though. Most neighbors don't mind.

I don't think it's illegal, because
A. You're not stealing the cat and
B. The cat came up to you, meaning they've allowed it to run loose.
And my dog runs off all the time (we live in Texas too), and people pet him, because he's too darn cute to not pet...

I don't think so... BUT cat owners aren't held liable for kitty capers such as bites or car damage, nor are there leash laws for cats (at least where I live) because a cat is regarded as "unleashable." Or something.

Anyway, go pet the cat, it's not crack dealing.

Yes, Texas has strict laws against petting a neighbor's cat. You can get 40 years-to-life on your first conviction. There are currently 877 prisoners at Huntsville serving time for that very offense.

it isnt illegal, cats arent property they are pets, living things, and cats esspecially are independent so you never really OWN a cat you can pet it and hold it and if they ahve a problem with it then dont do it anymore

If they're letting their cat go running around freely, it's their problem if someone else pets or holds it! They're lucky someone is showing her some affection instead of abusing her or hitting her with a car.

You're just petting the cat...not abusing or stealing it. Besides, its in your yard which gives you more of a right cause its on your property ;)
