Children behave because they fear punishment.
Fundamentalists believe because they fear punishment.
Is there a correlation here?

I do think it is a very simplistic way to view the world. Children often see the world in black and white, and so do fundamentalists.

Fundamentalists definitely have a problem with learning. Usually they are simply too stupid to be Atheists.

Fundamentalists guide to getting out of bed:-

1. Open eyes.
2. Sit up...legs straight
3. Swing body around (left or right) so that feet hang over
side of bed. Bend knees.
4. Wriggle a bit til feet actually touch floor. .....
5. Stand up..."Voila" you are out of bed!

6. If any difficulty experienced here, go back and "read the
instruction book" starting at Point 1. Under no
circumstances should you try this at home without
supervision, or try and think for yourself. That is why we
have prepared this book.

I think there is, but I think it is more lazyness and following the rules engrained in both children and the fundamentalist. I don't mean it in a bad way - there are a lot of things to think about and focus on in this life. If they can point and say "it's all here in black and white" then they can feel they are following the rules and they don't have to worry about anything else. It's safe and keeps them out of trouble - and that is terrific in a way. Certainly safe kids that are not into trouble is a good thing, right?

Peace!

I like the comparison in this question. They do fear punishment. This fear has actually made them believe unquestioningly. When theories like evolution and the origin of the universe start to be accepted by the scientific majority they try to reconcile the differences between science and religion...then we end up with 'scientific' explanations of creation. I swear the earth is only 6000 years old....everything was put there with the APPEARANCE of age....BS.

Fundamentalism is more than immature; it is a bigoted, Pharisaic, holier than thou, self-righteous attitude that is dangerous to any religion.

The war in Iraq is fueled by Islamic and Christan fundamentalist groups. Many wars and persecutions in the past can also be attributed to Fundamentalist thinking. Inter-religious strife is also caused by Fundamentalists who think they are the only ones who are right and should be believed.

Absolutely. Literalism is a borderline mental illness IMHO. Granted I'm an odd source to say this, but taking Genesis literally is like taking Little Red Riding hood literally.

I think it is an immature belief system. I also think its more about a lack of faith, than faith. Fundamentalists put up a wall around their religion to keep from thinking. If they allow themselves to question it would all fall down like a house of cards.

I would put the most immature Amish person up against you and your self-congratulating view of the world.

I wouldn't exactly call them immature, just very close-minded and ignorant people who can't think with the slightest bit of logic.

Total lack of understanding of fundamentalism.

BTW, I am not a fundamentalist, but I have friends who are.
