I believe it is very reasonable ... as it will give your son a good ideal on how to manage his money after he pays his bills.. I mean after he moves out on his own he will have a sense of how to manage his money

Very reasonable for room, board, utilities, laundry etc. There are several things to consider however, when these arrangements are made. Does son/daughter make enough to pay this? Age 18 is pretty much the legal majority for many things. Will the person be " On their own" with their own hours etc? Is the whole concept agreable to all parties or did something happen to put this solution to the fore?
If the son/daughter is not going to college and wants to start the workaday world by learning to live and budget while at home, that's great. It would be a real economics lesson and at the same time, the safety net is there in the event of a big fall.

Well, if I read your question correctly, your husband is not the father of your son, but rather a stepfather. He may be trying to exert some control over your son in this manner. Overall, I think if your son is going to school and helping out some in the household, he shouldn't pay rent.

Your situation depends. Is he irresponsible and lazy? Then yes, this is reasonable. This should teach him a lesson on responsibility and the value of things. If he is not irresponsible and lazy, then no? If he is going to school or working, trying to better himself, then no. Cut him some slack. Besides, I'm almost ten years older than him and will be moving back in with my parents to complete my graduate degree full-time. Because I am "doing-something" with my life, I am living RENT FREE.

I have an 18 yr old,and he doesnt even make enough to pay that much. He makes his car payments, including insurance. He also does things around the house. At 18,we wouldn't dream of charging him 'rent'.
Good Luck

Is he still in school? Does he have a job? I think that it is fair if he is not in school and he has a job, otherwise he is your son and although you should not treat him like a baby, let him get it together first!
