In Hinduism, the cow is considered sacred and its protection is a recurrent theme in which she is symbolic of abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. Hindus do not worship the cow, yet it holds an honoured place in society, and most Hindus do not eat beef.

I have to answer a slightly different question almost every other day : Why do Indians not eat beef?
Let me tell you something: I am from India and I see cows on the streets, in the backyard, in farms, gardens, everywhere. Before commercial diaries and refrigeration came in, *every* family had a cow or two in their backyard. When you own an animal, they get close to you, and you start loving them. They dont appear to be food (Just as dogs dont appear food to americans). And being the religious types, Hindu people respect not just cows but also trees, parents, teachers, and elders. Having come to United States however, I see no cows at all. The only ones I see are chopped and cleaned and frozen in supermarket racks. There is no reason for me to feel "poor Jasmine, she was such a darling"

Monk is correct. Because the cow gives so much to help sustain human's life, only callous people would repay that kindness by slaughtering the cow for her flesh....

It's not really Indians that think cows (not just any cows, but the brahma bull acutally) are scared, its Hindus. They have 3 gods and one of them is the brahma. Its been a while since I read that, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

They believe in reincarnation. A cow could be a relative who died and has come back as a cow.

because they believe in reincarnation and they believe they come back as cows or the more higher wisdom learners do anyway...so they cant eat a cow without eating one of their own family.
