A devil's advocate is a person who takes the opposite position, not because they believe it, but because their taking the position for the sake of argument will make the other person clarify their position.

Devil's advocate (1760) is L. advocatus diaboli, one whose job it is to urge against the canonization of a candidate for sainthood.
Now it is a person who argues against a cause or position, not as a committed opponent but simply for the sake of argument or to determine the validity of the cause or position.

opposite of what???? An advocate is someone who helps the weak or uninformed. A devils advocate would be a soldier or worker of the devil or evil!!!!!!!! HELLOOOOO
