I saw this riddle months ago, but didnt get the answer. here goes.

There were three students getting a room at a hotel. The manager charges them $30 for the room, so each student puts in $10 each.
then after the students go to their room, the manager sees that he should have charged them $25 because they are students. so the manager gives the bellboy $5 to give back to the students. the bellboy thinks about this, and figures out that he cant split the money evenly between the 3 students, so he pockets $2 and gives them back $3, so $1 each to save any problems.

Ok, so each student ended up paying only $9 each ($10 at the start and was given $1 back). so $9 x 3 equals $27, plus the $2 the bellboy kept equals $29, where did the other $1 go?

i dont want any stupid answers like a hooker took it, or bellboy or manager kept it.
If you can figure it out, please give me your working out of it.

Plus it isnt $25 (the room charge) + $3 (the change) + $2 (the bellboys "tip") NOT IT!!

its not tax, its not this or that. i just want someone to explain how 9x3 +2 = 30. it doesnt. how can this be... its annoying the hell out of me.

so, (10x3) = 30
10x3 - 1x3 + 2 =29
where did the dollar go???

the bellboy has $2, not 3.

maths is all logical, it works everyway.
3x=12 is the same as 12/3=x. it works everyway it can be said, but this one isnt working!!!

ok, so if we arent supposed to times it, WHY!!!!

i asked this riddle on here a few weeks ago, but mine was worded a little differently...
anyway... The students paid $30 but with the $3 they got back they paid $27 (this is where everyone messes up." you dont "add" the $2 the bellboy kept, you "subtract it" leaving the three students paying a total of $25 for the room, which is $8.33 each. Or you could say 2 of them payed $8 and one of them payed $9 so that you dont raise the question about the missing penny... so they payed a total of $25 + the $3 they got in return + the $2 the bellboy has kept...
so im sry but the answer you gave as not right. is correct...

:)

what you are confused about is the fact that you cant take into consideration the fraction when doing this math in your head... the three students paid $8 and 1/3 each... but like i said, this raises the question of where the extra penny went...

heres the equation that this problem sets up...
first... the 3 students paid $30 total..

3x = 30

the manager gives $5 back...

3x -5 = 30 - 5

when solving any algebra equation you do the same action to both sides of the equal sign...

then the bellboy splits up the money... thisa is tricky you cant forget the parenthesis...

3x - (2 + 3) = 30 - 5

i hope this clarifies the answer enough for you!

:)

There is no answer, the dollar isn't missing. Merely realocated. The room charge is $25. Divide that by 3 you get $8.33, then add the dollar back to each and you have $9.33 x 3 which equals 28 plus the 2 pocketed by the bell boy.

Apparently the average pay, among all three students was $8.33 & 1/3 apiece. + the three $1.00 bills returned total $28. So the bellboy still has the two-dollar bill.

Ok....to solve this riddle get 30 pennies and go through the interchange of money as the students and the bellboy did. You'll find out where the money went.

10 times 3= 30.
now it's 30-5=25
25-2=3
he gave the 5 dollars to the bus boy meaning that the owner got 25 total.
25/ 3= $8.3333333
had he known from the beginning, each person would only owe $8.33. the bus boy took .66 from each person= .6666666X3= $2.00.
5-2=$3
each person is refunded $1 meanin that they only paid $9.
9X3= 27. 10X3=30 there's one number difference and 3X1= 3 so that's why, but in real life it doesn't really work out...i guess.
