Do not take a tour!
That would be just a rip-off.
The great thing about NYC is the subway system.
Its sooooeasy to get from point to point and its very cheap.
Don't take cabs. Its uneccessary...you won't get there any quicker and it'll cost more. Note that NYers don't really drive...we are a walking people.
All the suggestions the other people made are good.
But dining in NYC is not pricey...if you know where to look. If you eat at a tourist trap like TGI Friday's in Times Square ..well of course it'll be pricey! And DO NOT eat at McDonalds! That's just disgusting! Who eats that garbage anyways??!!! NYC has so many ethnic cuisines it'd be a shame not to try something new.
Go to menupages.com, click on the neighborhood you think you'll be in around lunch/dinner time and select by pricing.
Here are some suggestions on what to do that day (pick and choose depending on amount of time and likes):
*Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise-- By starting your day on the water on this 2-hour half-island cruise, you'll get a very good overview of Manhattan. On the cruise you'll pass by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, see the Lower Manhattan skyline, proceed up the East River where you will cruise under the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges, and view the United Nations and the east side skyline, including the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building.
*Empire State Building-go to the 86th floor observatory
*Rockefeller Center on 5th Avenue
*Saint Patricks Cathedral (in the same vicinity as Rockefeller)
*Walk up down 5th Avenue and end up in Central Park.
*Go to Times Square as evening approaches...you'll appreciate all those lights more.
Enjoy your trip!

We go at Christmas and once in the summer. We usually just get off the train at Grand Central, get a map at the information desk and walk around all day. There's tons to do and see in walking distance of Grand Central. We go to St. Pauls Cathedral, the NY State Library, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, Times Square. Stroll down 5th Avenue and Broadway. Walking is nice because you can take your time and really look around. Grand Central itself is a place to see. Whatever you do, you'll have fun. If you do decide to go to Central Park I'd suggest taking the subway if you're worried about expenses. We finally braved it and it was really easy to figure out. We enjoyed walking around, riding the carousel and going to the zoo. Also, if you're on a budget think about eating at McDonalds or somewhere like that. Dining is expensive in Manhattan. I also don't carry my purse with me just because it's a long day and I don't want to lug it around. Have fun! Enjoy! (-:

New york , one of my favorites. Empire state building , a must If you want to stay in upper manhattan you can walk just about everywhere if you are in good health. Empire State is on 32 nd. st and central park begins on 57 th. If you like the Beatles ,in central park there is strawberry fields a mosaic that memorializes John. This is in front of the Dakoda building where he lived. My wife and I go twice a year and we always do something different. Have fun
