The Kalashnikov Rifle ( AK 47) is a machine gun. Not a semi -auto rifle. An AKS is a civilian version of the AK47 machine-gun. It is semi-auto. Under current Illinois law, rifles and shotguns can be owner by an18 year old. This has alot to do with farming and hunting heritage in Illinois whether a person agrees with the age issue or not. Handguns aren't typically used for hunting although that is changing some.
If you are aware of someone selling AK 47 machine guns, to anyone in Illinois without requisite tax stamps for machine guns, please call the Police ASAP irregardless of the age of the buyer.

Because the AK-47 is a single shot rifle.
You can't buy a real AK-47 without an extensive background check that equals out to be the same as a Top Secret Security clearance in the US Military.

Because a real pistol is more expensive than the AK-47 and you need the extra three years to save up the money?

Pistol may be purchased at age 18 in Illinois with parental consent. Look up 'Illinois firearms laws" on Yahoo. NRA-ILA is a good source.

Long guns (rifles and shotguns) have less strict rules that pistols (which are more easily concealed) for reasons that should be all too obvious after yesterday. Had the guy been armed with a long gun, they would have seen him walking across campus after the first shooting.

You are asking for a reason behind two different laws. That implies laws are passed for logical reasons. Many laws are passed simply so politicians can take credit for passing them. The less the voters know about the actual impact of the law the better.
