I've heard pastors in churches that I've visited (not in my own church, though) telling people that the love of God must come first, before family, friends, or self. Jesus did tell His disciples to leave family behind and follow Him, which is probably the basis of such teachings. It's just one way of looking at religious belief, and isn't practiced or endorsed by all believers.

Yes, actually, the more you love your child, the more you show your love for God. Now, if you say you love God more than your child and stay most of the time at the church without attending to the needs of the children, then there is something that the parent is escaping from....the responsibility of a parent to the child... and that is falsely loving God.

When one has seen it is no longer a belief. But one who has not seen can not understand the truth and will not understand their faith. The answer is yes. Our children are not ours, they are given to us by God (also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc.) to teach higher truths and to love God. There is no other purpose to have children or a husband or wife. Nothing belongs to us it is all on loan and will all be taken away at the time of death. Yes, they are sane.
We should love God first and foremost. He guides us and helps us with our children, so therefore - we are truly showing are children a greater love by accepting God in to our lives and loving him above all others.

People have harmed and even killed their own children out of 'love'. If a person truly believed in and loved God above all else, then the type of love they would most likely extend upon their children through this is bound to be a more loving, respectful one, being saner than most other people's.

well they are sane, cause youre supposed to love God more than anything. He is supposed to be first in your life. If you loved your kids moer than God, they be like an idol to you. It says in Matthew 10:37 37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
So from that verse, Im thinking that that person is very sane and doing what they should be. :)
hope this helps, God Bless

What you don't seem to be taking into account is that a person can love their own children more than they love their own life and still love God more than either of the other two. A great love for God does not preclude a great love for children.

I beg to differ. Obviously those who truly love the Lord know that love and know that He is their creator. By your logic, one can also only believe ones love for their child, not truly love them? True love is evoked when relationship happens. Real relationship is tangible both between God and His true followers as well as between those persons and their own children / spouse / siblings / etc.
there really is no sense in arguing the point either. Until you experience a true relationship with God, you cannot possibly understand that love.
ps - I understand that my children are gifts from God. They understand that too. I take the responsibility of that gift very seriously.
blessings :)

God is telling us to love one another that is to include your members of your immediate family and your friends. and it include our enemies.
The love of mankind to his fellow mankind is different from the said love of God in spiritual matter. You can love your family in material thing and spiritual thing while our love to God is on spiritual thing alone because God is spiritual being.
That is what it means by " Love God above all things"
and by loving God it is the respect of God, obey his commandments and law, believe his teachings, not to do bad things or not to kill, not to steal.not to rob, not to commit adulterous act, and so forth and so on.
Will you be called insane for doing good things?
Will you be insane for respecting God on spiritual matters? Or will you be insane for obeying his commandments knowing that it is a good command and law of God?.. Think.. think... and think over and over.

--YOU ARE RIGHT sane reality is indeed what true worship(belief) should engender!
--IT DEPENDS on the God one worships!
--IS THAT GOD reasonable in all things?
--WHAT TRACK record does this God have for proof?
--CHEWEY made a good point on Abraham! Please realize that indeed God would not have left Abraham carry that out --ESPECIALLY if Abraham really meant to do the non-Biblical attempt
--AS YOU KNOW Jehovah God stopped the "dramatic act"--WHY DO I refer to this as a DRAMA? Please note:
(Galatians 4:24) “24 21 Tell me, YOU who want to be under law, Do YOU not hear the Law? 22 For example, it is written that Abraham acquired two sons, one by the servant girl and one by the free woman; 23 but the one by the servant girl was actually born in the manner of flesh, the other by the free woman through a promise. These things stand as a symbolic drama; for these [women] mean two covenants, the one from Mount Si´nai, which brings forth children for slavery, and which is Ha´gar. . .”
--THIS ENTIRE CHAPTER especially is outstanding in that what the early drama involving Isaac & Abraham PICTURED what Jehovah God would request of his Son , Christ Jesus to do for THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE for mankind!
--PLEASE KEEP IN MIND That God NEVER asked for such a thing to take place with ANY one else in the entire history of the Bible times!
--RELIGIONS at times have used the above scenario as a motivator for people to give up their children on the "ALTAR OF WAR"---
--THIS ATROCITY which is being carried out has no backing of the christianity of Christ!
--THUS AS YOU SPOKE OF REALITY---You will find no where in the Bible where Jehovah God, ever sanction any human sacrifice, angry judgements by wayward Israelites--who carried out murders etc. without ANY sanction of his --etc.
--WHEN INDEED he took action such as with the incident at Egypt & the 10 plagues, or Jericho he did the major destroying!
--INTERESTING breakdown on what putting God first before anyone as the Bible & Christ taught is set off in this commentary on HATE!
*** it-1 pp. 1042-1043 Hate **
In the Scriptures the word “hate” has several shades of meaning. It may denote intense hostility, sustained ill will often accompanied by malice. Such hate may become a consuming emotion seeking to bring harm to its object. “Hate” may also signify a strong dislike but without any intent to bring harm to the object, seeking instead to avoid it because of a feeling of loathing toward it. The Bible also employs the word “hate” to mean loving to a lesser degree. (Ge 29:31, 33; De 21:15, 16) For example, Jesus Christ said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own soul, he cannot be my disciple.” (Lu 14:26) Obviously Jesus did not mean that his followers were to feel hostility or loathing toward their families and toward themselves, as this would not be in agreement with the rest of the Scriptures.—Compare Mr 12:29-31; Eph 5:28, 29, 33.
--SO INDEED A CHRISTIAN would never put their family in a "seeming" jepardy!
