Can schedule 40 pvc pipe hold 50psi of air without blowing up? I have a project at school to make an air cannon and we have to use a bike pump to pressurize the cannon with 50psi of air. We can only spend 20$ so I was thinking that I could use schedule 40 pvc pipe to hold my air. What do you guys think?

Sch. 40 pipe should hold 50 psi but if you need to glue any fittings together you should make sure you are following the manufacturer's specifications if you don't have any experience with it. Compressing air can be dangerous because it is explosive when released all at once, and 50 psi is a lot of pressure. Stay clear of the ends of the pipe or any fittings that could fail and fly off when the pipe is under pressure.

If you want to do this safely, the answer would be no. PVC pipe is not rated for any air usage. Sorry kids, but the manufacturer info states specifically air or gas of any type is not to be used in nor is air or gas of any type an approved material for PVC pipe to handle. PVC get very brittle when cold and then bad things happen.

Now for reality, 50 PSI is not that much pressure. You could have eye damage but probably not kill anyone using it and the pipe splits open. Good joints with priming and then a medium strength glue would be just fine.

Good luck with your gun....

I don't know about other states but there IS a code for butane and / or propane statewide in my state. But even if there wasn't, I would still use copper or black pipe. Copper is easy to use and is not that expensive. If the tank is too far from the house, move it closer. Propane and butane will deteriorate the pvc pipe rather rapidly so I wouldn't even use it for a temporary fix.

I made many potato cannons in my life and have seen the endurance of pvc pipe, i would say YES. Also it should have a pressure rating printed on the side.

Well we use it for gas porposes at work and it holds up to 100# as long as your glue is the good kind not that cheap kind. Or if you just use short pieces and make a went on it it shoudl hold real good. By making a vent I mean on the cannon pass the air where when you fire it so make it half way.

what Chuck_N said...

PVC pipe is not rated for compressed gas use of any kind. That being said, I have used 75 PSI air pressure for a science fair bottle rocket launcher with no problem at all.

Sure, but wrap it with tape in case an imperfection splits. That way no pieces hurt anyone.
