I walk, take subways, take buses and very rarely take cabs - I'm scared to death of them - I was in an accident while I was a passenger in a cab. I would rather be in the train at 3am than ride in a taxi - it's safer on the train.

I almost never take a cab but I do take the subway a lot since I live in Brooklyn and I need to get into Manhattan multiple times a week. Once I'm in Manhattan, I usually just walk everywhere since I stick to areas in lower Manhattan. It's faster to walk sometimes than to wait for the train. I have a friend that walks everywhere, she lives near me in Brooklyn and she walks over the Williamsburg bridge to get to the East Village/Lower East Side. Most 'average' people don't like to waste the time or money on a cab since traffic can make the trip expensive and you have to tip, etc.. A lot of people I know only take cabs when they are really drunk or freezing because it's the middle of winter. The bus is the other option but it confuses a lot of people and it can be difficult to tell which bus is stopping where. If you're not familiar with the public transportation system in the city, the subway is much faster and easier than the bus sometimes.

To some extent, it is true! Most parts of the city are accessibly by subway. And when that doesn't get me where I'm going, I combine it with a bus. And if that doesn't work, I throw some walking in there!
I have never used a taxi yet, even though I've lived here all my life. The other ways are cheaper and often easier.
But yeah, in many ways, it is true! A car is not a necessity in this town.

We walk an awful lot too.
Of course there many parts of New York City, like parts of Queens, Brooklyn and The Bronx, and pretty much all of Staten Island, where driving a car is the norm. But in Manhattan, subways and cabs are much more convenient.

There is no place to park a car in Manhattan and the cabbies try to run you off the street .
Your best bet is to take the Subway or Bus to get around the city .

In Manhattan, it is more convenient to take public transportation (Train, Bus or Cab).
The other Boroughs, cars are a bit more feasible depending where you are going..
Check this clip out, only Bike Messengers transport themselves like this....
