We have baby chicks that are 2 1/2 weeks old, we have a few questions:
1) We're sure we'll get at least one rooster, aside from light detection, what is the earliest time you can tell. (anytime before they get combs)
2) When do they start laying eggs?
3) How many eggs do chickens normally lay in a week period?

you can tell if they are roosters or hens right when they are born, you can either squeeze the poop out and then look to see if there is a little bump there or not (if there is a bump its a rooster) or you can look at its wing feathers, if they are straight it is a girl, and if it's not straight its a boy. They start laying eggs at about 22 weeks. they usually lay one egg a day, so you will get about 5-7 eggs per chicken per week

At two and a half weeks, I would not try to vent sex them. You should be able to get a good idea at 2 1/2 weeks old as to the sex. The roosters combs should be starting to get noticably bigger than the pullets, as well as they should have more color.
