Yes, bicycling is very good for getting in shape. You should ride for at least 20 or 30 minutes at a time. The speed should be the fastest that you can go the same speed for 20 minutes, so that is like a medium speed so you will not get tired in only 5 minutes, But you should be very tired in 30 minutes.
Oh ya, biking also gives you really great looking thighs and butt. ;P

To lose weight you need to do what is called a cardiorespitory workout. That is a workout that works both Heart(cardio) and lungs(respitory). Jogging, walking, bicycling and swimming are all cardiorespitory workouts. Now take in account your age, weight, level of fitness, they are all important. If you are really overwieght you would not want to start running because it is a high impact activity for your knees and with the excess weight would do more harm then good in the long run. Walking, biking and swimming are all low impact cardiorespitory workouts. Now swimming is said to be the best, but just because you jump in a pool do 3 laps you arent done. You have to ensure you get your heart rate up for an extended amount of time(at least 30 minutes). So walking and bicycling are the best because you can do that activity for a long time. I notice when I swim I do about 3 or 4 laps and start to get tired then look at the clock and I have only been working out for 5 minutes. For me it is a psycological barrier. The best way to keep it all fresh and fun is to do them all. One day you go for a walk, after work you go to the gym for a swim and do some weights as someone metioned, on the weekend wake up early go for a run, and on a sunday morning take a 10 to 15 mile bike ride. I have been in the Army for 7 years(i was wounded in Iraq which is why I am retired now), so my experience is not just a guess, but it still is only my opinion, hope it helps. Good Luck US, Army(retired) Staff Seargent

Bicycling is an excellent way to lose weight. You probably won't gain much muscle mass but your muscles will definitely become stronger. Actually, your legs will become more shapely. Walking is also an excellent method of weight control. You need to exercise 40 - 60 minutes at least 3 times per week. Everyday is much better. Start out slow and easy and as you become stronger you can increase your time and effort. Combined with the exercise, you should try to eat a balanced diet. Eliminate the junk food and avoid eating in the evening and you should be on your way to achieve your weight goal. Good Luck!

Yes bicycling will help you lose weight, I wouldn't worry about building up big muscles you would have to do a hell of a lot of riding. You will get deffinition on your legs but it will look good. Do you mean a tread mill? if so i would say you need to walk at least a mile at a quick pace, that will help get your heart rate up and be benificial to your heart as well as your weight. How much weight are you wanting to loose?

Any exercise, will help you loose weight. However, nutrition is as important as exercise. Reducing the carbohydrates in your diet, along with exercise, will have a synergistic effect.
I really don't think, you need to concern yourself with excessive muscles, as a result of bicycling or walking. Your legs will become nicely toned.

Why are you worried about getting big muscles from riding a bicycle? Have you ever seen a professional cyclist? They are built like an ink pen. To answer your question, if you had spent the time it took you to type that question actually walking around the block, your butt would be smaller already. But you didn't...so you're already behind. And now, every second you spend reading my response is making your rear-end even larger. So go back and read it again from the start.

you should do cardio for 30-45 min/day for at least 4x per week to see results. I would do a brisk walk (like 4.0 mph) for 25 min and bike for 20 min. You might feel your muscles bulge after your workouts, but they won't get bigger unless you do weight training. Unless you're reeally undefined---then they might, but it will look good.
Hope this helps!

ummm...any exercise will give you more muscles. but contrary to belief, you won't get "buff" unless you use steroids. you will have toned muscles. so, don't work about getting buff. work hard until you feel the sweat, or it's not working.
