Spartans fought best as a group, if you broke their formation or got them alone, they weren't nearly as effective. Samurais were masters of hand to hand combat, they would will hands down in a one on one with Spartan.

And the greatest warrior of all time was without a doubt Genghis Khan

I thought the Israeli Defense Force had the best warriors today? : P So it's the U.S. now eh? Because of Iraq?
Anyway to the question: I'd pick the Samurai over the Spartan because of the reasons stated above by others. The Samurai's Katana alone is one of the most d3adly and versatile sword in history. The Spartans used a far shorter sword and were more effective when using their javelins and shield in formation. And Samurai like the Spartans were raised for fighting and trained since childhood, they usually start military service at the age of fourteen and train not just in fighting with weapons, but in tactics and strategy as well. By the way, Samurai is a social class, not a job or a career anyone can take up if they wanted to, In the old days, to become one means to embrace a life that's focused on sacrificing one's life in service of his Daimyo or Liege Lord. If a Daimyo dies, the samurai who served him were expected to take their own life as well in ritual suicide, to join their Daimyo in the afterlife. So psychologically, both Spartan and Samurai basically had the same mindset.

Man! That would be a good fight but my money would be on the Spartan. Sure the samurai where masters at war but the Spartans raised their kids to be warriors. They where trained to fight from day one.

As for the greatest warrior, that would be hard to say but I like Attia The Hun and Alexander The Great.

neither they've both been dead for a long time.if they were alive though samurai, spartans were foot soldiers not one on one combatants like samurai.samurai also have very good sword skills most spartans only had basic sword skills and used a sword more as a bludgeon than a sword.
EDIT the person who said samurais only want to win you obviously have no idea what bushido is.a samurai would rather die than be defeated in battle, and in fact it was quite common for them to take thier own life if they did lose.

Samurai because he'll be trained in hand-to-hand combat as well as weapons combat. The greatest warriors of all time were the Union Army of the Civil War. We're the United States of America, not the Confederate States of America!

I trained my Spartan troops in all forms of combat. In wrestling, boxing and when fighting in a unit they would destroy any other warrior on earth. Alas, they could not compete with a true samurai armed with katana in a man-to-man fight. The bronze armor made them too slow. 80 pounds of bronze all facing forward was designed for unit combat, not gladitorial.

The fighter that has better training, superior equipment, is in better health, has more desire to win, is more familiar with the environment,................there are many factors here. it doesn't just come down to which civilization they are from.
Samurai's, ninja, Spartans, and all those other old warriors are fun to read about and imagine but remember this...
the greatest warriors ever are in the US armed forces and do not forget that!

Spartans, fought in groups and trained to fight as an army. They used their weapons and spears jointly. Samurai, although they could fight in small groups were trained in individual warfare. One on one the edge would have to be with the Japanese.

A spartan would win for one reason only: a spartan wanted to die gloriously in battle, whereas a samurai only wanted to win.
