Tell her the truth, there is no god and what is happening to your loved ones are just things that happen to living beings, The quicker you accept that, the less suffering you will put yourself through.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and don't lean on your own understanding. In all things acknowledge him, and he shall direct your way. (Proverbs 3:5)

Remind her, that just as she is suffering, there are many others who have suffered as much, and many times even more than her. A quick review of the life of Jesus, is clear testimony of how much suffering he went through, but it was all for a great purpose.
Tell her that although she may not be able to see that purpose right now, there is one. Understanding that, will serve to make her stronger, and assist her in surviving this crisis.
I also suggest you get her to do some volunteer work for others, such as the elderly, the mentally handicapped or cancer victims. Often times when we focus on others' worries, ours step to second place, and we are able to count our blessings, and focus less on our sorrows.
May God bless you and your friend, and give you the guidance and the strenght to continue to help her.

I am so glad that I saw your question, because I too lost a child of 12 years. This was some time ago, and the Lord alone has healed me. I fed on His Word the Bible, and meditated on it.

The book of Isaiah is wonderful and the Psalms too!

Isaiah chapter 43 verses 1-2

Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by Name; you are mind. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you!

Ecc 12:6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

mm. Interesting. The Bible says for those who believe, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
(2 Corinthians 5:8)

Read 1 Corinthians 15:55-58

"So when this corruptible [body] shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal [body] shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Isaiah 43:2

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

I Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you

I hope these help in her time of need.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, please see the links I added and use the verses that you believe will help her out. And let her know that God does not let us go through things if we weren't strong enough to overcome it. Let her know that keeping faith will make her stronger.
