You are wrong, I don't care how many friends you have who think otherwise, or how long your girlfriend worked for the IRS. Being a student doesn't make you tax-exempt. You might be, if your income is low enough, but that has nothing to do with being a student.

Sorry, but you're not tax exempt. Being a student doesn't make you tax exempt. There's no place to enter that in TT.

Nice try!

Addendum: You don't put "tax exempt" in Turbo Tax, Bunkie! There is NO SUCH FILING STATUS! You might be able to claim EXEMPT from withholding but that does NOT make you EXEMPT from TAX!

Your G/F is either clueless or a liar if she's telling you that. What did she do at the IRS, clean toilets??

An HR manager knows employment law, not tax law. Taking their word for a tax question is like going to the plumber to have a broken TV repaired.

If you lost your W-2 you'll need to go to your employer and get a copy. You can't file your return without that. Your income is low enough that you probably don't have any tax liability (and therefore don't need to file) but you are NOT "tax exempt."

There is no place to enter tax exempt on turbotax.

You do not owe taxes because your income is below the standard deduction. Fill out Form 1040EZ and you will get your withholding back.

If you don't have your W-2 you will have to use a substitute W-2, Form 4852.

You can get the necessary forms at irs.gov, or Turbotax will do it.

Go to your state website and get the form for your state and mail that in. You will get your withholding back from the state as well.

Being a full time student has nothing to do with being tax exempt. If you earned enough money, you have to pay taxes. Your girlfriend is wrong. Maybe that's why she USED to work for the IRS.

Did you have a job? If yes Then you made income so you will have to fill out taxes. Becuase you are asking this today I assume you did not start yet so you should get started becasue they are due today at midnight.

Ohh that is what you meant by excempt. Well you still have to fill out the forms. Just fill the forms out correctly and you'll get your money back.
