just make sure you wash it all out, otherwise you can get a combo of dandruff and product built up on your scalp.

Hairspray and gel (especially cheap ones) have a high alcohol content, and thus are quite drying to hair so you need to compensate by deep conditioning 1-2x/week. V05 Hot Oil is one good product... there are tons in the drugstore. More expensive brands (Ojon, Oscar Blandi, Frederic Fekkai, Nexxus, etc) typically use better ingredients and less alcohol so you could try switching it up. Sephora.com has a selection of these brands. Still, these products are much less damaging than heat straightening.
Sleeping with wet hair is ok, but it can break strands since wet hair is more delicate and prone to damage.

Hairspray/gel shouldn't be damaging as long as you wash it out. Sleeping in wet hair shouldn't be damaging.

If the gel or hairspray has lots of alcohol - it can dry out your hair over time.
The other issue is product build up. You can use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of it. Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo is my favorite.
Sleeping on wet hair can be bad if it gets tangled & pulled around. Hair is more prone to breaking when it is wet.

hairspray && gell shouldn't be damaging to your hair, but you can always ask your hairstlylist. straightening is more damaging, cause of the heat. it causes split ends, you can straighten your hair, but not everday. about sleeping when your hair is wet is proably damaging, but not as damaging has blow drying, cause of the heat && all. like i said ask your hairstlyist, cause i am not a professional that is just what i have heard.

Using hairspray and anything related to it will not damage your hair unless you use too much of it!

it's best to put products on your hair for protection from the heat when you straighten it instead of hair spray because they only make hair sticky and more frizy when rain comes. try use this http://content.ulta.com/images/products/large/2119714.jpg i love this product. it makes y our hair sleek and shine just like the bottle says. it's garnier fructis sleek and shine. but you get better results when you use the shampoo and the conditioner too. http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/ee/60/Garnier_Fructis_Sleek_Shine_Fortifying_Cream_Conditioner-resized200.jpgor you can go to the salon and get paul mitchell's super skinny shampoo and cond. treatment that's what I use after the garnier fructis. and their skinny serum. both of these makes your hair super smooth and silky instead of sticky from the hair spray or gel. well good luck and hope it works out for you and have fun. oh yeah you must apply the serum before you staighten it might steam a little but that's what my hairstylist does and what its doin is it's protecting your hair from the heat.
