Doctors leave the room out of respect for the patient. This allows the patient a bit of modesty and dignity. Although the dr. may see some of your goodies, rarely does a dr. see an entire naked patient. Patients are usually covered with a paper gown, or other covering, except for the specific area the dr. is focusing on.

And I also agree with the poster who stated that there is a difference in watching someone disrobe and seeing someone naked. It can be a bit erotic to watch someone undress, but when doc walks in and sees just another patient in a paper gown, he has no distractions (hopefully).

Out of respect and helping you preserve some dignity. Many people would be embarrassed to be disrobing in front of the doctor. Since you change with him or her out of the room, they can hopefully only expose a bit of your body at a time for the exam. It's courtesy and respect.

For one, they're respecting your privacy, at least nominally.

Two, depending on how they're running the office, they're with another patient instead of killing time with you when you're dressing/undressing. They're almost as bad as lawyers with their eyes on the clock marked in dollars.

Three, especially afterward, they're not especially comfortable discussing their findings with naked people, and you'll have your attention divided between dressing and what you're being told (probably remember none of it).

I think that there is someting different from seeing someone undress than seeing them naked. It could also ruin marriages if someone undressing 5 times a day...

They don't have enough time on their hands to wait til you get undressed. Not to mention, it is disrespectful.
Nowadays, you put on a paper gown anyway.
