Some of their beliefs are pretty closely in line with those of Christianity, but I know there are some differences. I'm not really THAT familiar tho.
www.beliefnet.com is a great source of information for many religions, might be worth a shot for you to look there.

There are a number of different belies between the two. They are both based on Christianity, but do have a number of beliefs that they don't agree on as well.

Having been part of both churches, I have seen how both have certain things right and certain things wrong. (There isn't a church/religion anywhere in the world today that has EVERYTHING right).

While many of the beliefs that they disagree on can seem to be more "simple" items, such as whether a person should drink coffee or not.. There are some major belief differences as well. Mormons (Latter Day Saints actually is the proper term) believe, for example, that the president of their church is the current living prophet. Pentecostals, from my experience, put a huge weight on the idea of speaking in tongues, etc.

Both groups are Christian groups.. But they do have such varying belief systems as Pentecostals and Catholics do as well. (I do find it interesting that, in general, people in Pentecostal churches consider Catholics a Christian church, but consider Mormons a cult! I've never understood that, and never will... I may even have to post a question about it :) heh)

Honey,
Don't ask this question on YA, because you won't get the truth. People that aren't Mormon seem to think they know what Mormon's believe, and some of the lies they speak I wouldn't know anyone in their right mind that would actually believe it, and I'm a Mormon. If you want to talk to your friend about religion, all you have to do is have an understanding with each other that you don't believe the same things, that you're not trying to convert each other, but you each are curious about the other's belief's. And have an agreement where you agree to disagree, then you will never have an argument about religion. You need to approach it in a way that when you ask each other questions, you're not asking them to try and prove them wrong in their belief's but instead asking because you are curious and want to share with each other what you believe.

Any two denominations will have differences, otherwise they do not have very strong religious convictions. I love how all the "Christians" on this board have no problem treating Mormons and other groups so horribly, and love spreading lies about them. I grew up with several Mormon friends (and Jews and Muslims, oh my!) and have studied their faith quite a bit, and can tell you that there are a lot of lies on this board. Try Wikipedia, they are quickly becoming a good objective source. And the idea of going to lds.org is not a bad idea to get beliefs direct from the source. All in all, the key is to be respectful. You and your friend need to realize that to understand another is not to accept their beliefs and that your friendship is not based on your sharing all of your beliefs.

Mormons do have a few fundamental belief differences from other Christian denominations. At the core of it all, though, they worship the same Jesus and God that the rest of Christianity does. They believe in the atonement, the death and subsequent resurrection, and divinity of Jesus Christ.

So what makes the Mormons so different from the rest of Christianity? It is not so wide a gap as you might think. You believe that God once spoke revelation through living prophets... Mormons believe that He still does.

Gordon B. Hinckley, the current Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said: "We, of course, accept Jesus Christ as our Leader, our King, our Savior...the dominant figure in the history of the world, the only perfect Man who ever walked the earth, the living Son of the living God. He is our Savior and our Redeemer through whose atoning sacrifice has come the opportunity of eternal life."

Most of the things are similar, because they are Christian. But there are differences, just as there are in many other Christian religions. Such as they don't believe in the Trinity. No they are not a cult. if they are, all religions are cults. Because its not like they sit around worshiping some crazy little thing. It is a religion. go to a church website. there are too many things to just explain right now. Don't believe any websites not approved by the church, because they are created by people who left. And don't like the religion because it was too controlling. they are a bunch of lies, don't believe any of it. Oh and those secret practices, are sacred and thats why they are not discussed. Because they are too special and not to just be discussed openly. Have you ever had something special in your life the whole world shouldn't know about? or doesn't need to?

I would talk to your friend that is probally the best source, and she could tell you anything you specifically want to know. She won't be offened. Many of us are more then willing to share what we believe. I had a Cathloic friend and we shared each other's belief's all the time it helped understand more about each other, mind you neither of wanted to convert to the other's relgion we just wanted to know why the other did certain things. Other then that you should check the church web site for the most truthful answers lds.org. There have already been many things posted that just are not what we are, or do. It's always best to go to the direct source.
Hope this helps you.
Good Luck!

Hey, I am LDS, and yes many of our beliefs are similar with other Christian beliefs (degree varies by denomination) and many of our beliefs are unique or different (which is what makes us our own denomination of course).

I think a good place for you to start is the official church website - you can get a good overview of our basic beliefs here: http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-1,00.html
I'm not very familiar with all the doctrines of the Pentecostal religion, but you can compare and contrast them as you like (if you want to add details with a link describing your basic beliefs, I'd find that interesting too btw).

Oh, and I wouldn't worry about asking your friend, most of us are very used to answering our friends questions on our beliefs - it's pretty common. Anyway, she can clear up any misconceptions you might hear (there are plenty floating around on this board for sure) - just be respectful, you can be supportive of her living her faith, and she can be supportive of you living your faith - even when you disagree on some things.

Best Wishes

I'm suprised by some of these answers even for Y!A's they're pretty bad.

Many of the first answers were just plain lies. Most Christian sects actually have classes about how to prove Mormons wrong. Many Christians sects hate us and most of it is because they don't understand us and are fed lies by their pasters etc.

Talk to your friend, I doubt she'd get offended. We love to tell others about our faith, because it brings us such happiness and peace.

The real name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe in the Bible and Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of th Father and He is our Savior. We do not practice polygamy and we are very family oriented.

E-mail me if you'd like further info.

Have a great day! :)

Yes mormons are the same as christians only with another book added to the bible. And for all the idiots thay say different, you are wrong. I grew up mormon, although I am not anymore.

I would like to know where people get the idea that mormons dont believe in the bible? You are completely wrong when you say that.

And also, mormons don't believe in polygamy. It was abolished over 100 years ago. Catholics leaders have actually been proven to have practiced polygamy longer than mormons. Is that not hilarious to anyone but myself?
