It depends on how much the lottery was for. If it was for a large sum of money (say 7 figures or more), I would sit down and figure out how to divvy the money.

1. I would definitely put money aside for my children's future education.
2. I would set aside money for my children to get a house.
3. I would pay off any debts that I had (credit card, car loans, mortgage).
4. I would also put money away in an IRA for my retirement.
5. I would help my family in any way possible.
6.I would make charitable donations to my high-school and to some other good causes (ASPCA, Cancer, etc).
7. I would also put money aside for myself to go back to school.
8. I would help my wife with her self-employment plans (real estate) by buying properties and then turning them and selling them to other friends or family that need a house and give them a much better rate than any bank or lending institution would.
9. I would travel to all the places in the world that I've dreamed of.
10. I would have a custom home built for my family.

You're talking 8 or 9 figures, right?

Pay off my debts.
Move back to the city I grew up in.
Buy a new car (nothing insane, say $20,000 - $25,000)
Buy a house.
Take a vacation.
Go to college and learn some interesting stuff. (And this time, I don't mean the list of daily specials at the Bayou Bar and Grill)

Wait, that's basically the stuff I need to do now anyway.

I would go to a tax lawyer, I will put my money in place where I can earn interest off of it, and put it in a trust fund where I know I won't be taxed too heavily on my winnings. Then I will take trip around the world and publish a book on my travels.

I would buy a car that I can depend on, buy a house for me and my kids and start them all collage funds. There are alot of things that I would do afterwords, new computer, rings, clothes for all of us, etc. but those are the first things I would do. Make sure my kids have what they need then give us all what we want.
