I would say a 20 or 12 ga. I would get a good turkey choke. I would also take him and shot a few different round to get him use to the weapon and see how the weapons patterns.
good luck

If he's old enough to handle a 12-bore, that should be the choice. Fit will be the biggest challenge, and it's much more important than most people think. You don't need massive firepower, so a single-shot or double will work nicely, and depending again on his age and size, it's tempting to go with a cheap single-shot (full choke) so you don't feel too bad about taking a hacksaw to the wood, a job best left to the pro's unless you're really knowledgable.

Youth model 12 or 20 gauge would be good with an extra full or turkey choke tube. Mainly depends on his age and size whether he should be shooting a youth model or not and which ever he's comfortable with.

He should prpbably use a 20 gauge for his first hunt but he might want to buy a turkey stablilizer which will hold the shot better at longer yardage.

If the 20ga. is allowed in your state it is very effective for turkey but if he can handle the recoil of a 12 ga. have him look at those too.As for makes and models look around at one of your local gunshops that knows how to fit a person to their firearm ie: if young or small size a youth model! Good luck and have fun! (juztmy2cents)

20 ga. shotgun. H&R makes youth size single shots, good and will last forever. He can give it to his grandson and it will still work.
