Why do you need to know? If your tax software is asking, it only matters to determine if you owe an under-withholding penalty. The number the software wants is your total Federal income tax from your 2005 return. If you expect a refund, just enter "$0". The penalty NEVER applies unless you OWE.

Did you owe last year, or did you get a refund? If you got a refund, then enter zero.

If you owed: if you paid what you owed, then that's the number you're looking for. Either look in your checkbook to see how much the check was that you wrote, or look at last year's return and see what it says on the line "Amount You Owe" - if you paid it all, enter that number.

It will be the amount of money you paid in and should be reported on your W-2

Good Luck!
