Two totally different classes of meds there. Ibuprofen is an NSAID, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Prednisone is a steroid drug, sometimes prescribed for various inflammations.

The dr. probably prescribed the prednisone because the ibuprofen wasn't helping the inflammation. Be sure to take the prednisone as directed. Do not stop taking them immediately without checking with your dr. Your dr. will probably taper your dose of prednisone down, instead of stopping all at once.

Watch for side effects of prednisone: weight gain, swelling, irritability, weakness, slower than normal healing of small cuts and scratches.

Prednisone is not even in the same class as ibuprofen. There's really no way to compare them except that ibuprofen is like a propeller plane and Prednisone is like a jet rocket.

Pay close attention to any side effects you experience on Prednisone and notify your doctor if you are having problems. It will make you extremely hungry, so be aware of this and drink lots of water.

Prednisone and Ibuprofen can't be compared in that way because they do completely different things.
He probably wanted to use the ibuprofen to reduce some inflammation. When it didn't work, he decided to use the prednisone to reduce the inflammation, but it works in a whole different way.
