It's their instinct from when they were wild animals - they bury food that's left over for a "rainy day" when there's no food available. Of course with 99 per cent of domestic dogs, that day will never come, but they can't help themselves! My dog tries to bury her treats, usually pigs ears, at the back of her kennel (complete with "digging"). Very funny!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7pP
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I have two dogs; one buries everything and the other finds it. I believe in my situation it is to hide or protect it. Also, dogs like to keep active and it is something for them to do. I really don't think your dog forgets where it buried it.
For example, my dog buried an eye from a teddy bear last winter. And then come spring, dug it up. That was a lot of time past. But I'm quite sure there are many other buried things. Dogs bury items in order to hoard them, protect them, or store them. As another said, it's instinct.

I have 4 dogs and anytime they have a bone or a snack they bury it. They usually hide it from one another or save it until later and then go back and get it when they feel like eating it.

Dogs were once totally wild animals. They would bury their extra food so that no other animal could get to it. This was like their system of us putting food in our pantry or refrigerator. When they get a bone and do not want to share it, they bury to keep it from other dogs or "intruders" like you who might want to take it from them.

They probably do that to make sure no one else takes it. they might also want to put it somewhere safe.
