It's a built-in extension to make your table larger; when not in use, it "hides" underneath the table top. Here's a picture.

It is the leaf that makes your table larger and is attached and stored in the center of the table. When u pull the table apart it starts to pop up and then you pull it all the way up and push the table back together.

its when the extra portion of the table is stored underneath and you lift up part of the table to pull it out.
