I deal with this problem for many of my patients.
Try walking a lot, drinking loads of water (that is the clear stuff, with nothing added) and eating more fruits and vegetables.
You can try fiber supplements like Metamucil, Fibercon, and Citracel. Metamucil wafers are available in drug stores and grocery stores, and taste better than a glass of metamucil gelatin. These products will treat BOTH constipation and diarrhea.
Stool softeners are an alternative to laxatives. Colace is available over the counter...take it with lots of water.
Many people claim french onion soup without the cheese will help. If you are lactose intolerant, drinking milk will provide a temporary relief, but has its own problems (flatulence and cramps).
Drink lots of broth and soup.
Try a couple of tablespoons of mineral oil or vegetable oil. Swallow them down and wait a few hours.

Chronic constipation or encopresis is when the body is unable to retain the fluids and fiber needed to fully evacuate the bowels on a regular basis.
use of natural fiber products such as psyllium can offer relief since it is a bulk producing fiber. FiberCon, Benefiber and other daily supplements can help, but you should experiment with your doctor's consent so that there is no interference with other medication or interaction from the additional fiber.
other remedies are use of REAL vegetable, prune and apple juices as well as additional water in the diet. the pulpier the juices are the better since they have the actual fiber in them.
there are also many excellent prescription products on the market that can help and stool softeners are NOT habit forming and can help draw water into the stool making it easier to pass.
see your doctor for a complete check so that your doc can rule out any other possible condition or circumstance that might be adding to your problems.
sitz baths can also help relax the anal sphincter and help with elimination.
hope this helps.

I had the same problem for months, then I went to my health food store and got some Acidophilus Bifidus (sounds awful), it's just capsules that restore your bowels natural function. I also take a product called "Flush the Fat" which helps too. And the "lactulose" that you can get at the drugstore which someone else said brings water to the bowel. Those three things combined should bring you relief within a couple of days. And if you are like me you also need to eat better. I have fibromyalgia and don't eat properly which doesn't help matters. Good luck!

To be honest with you this is a very serious problem, but can be cured easily. Laxatives are not going to solve the problem. What you need is preventive solutions like adding extra fiber to your diet. Nine time out ten your diet is the problem and lack of water in the body. You must drink plenty of fluids (mainly water) and take fiber supplements i.e. Fiber con and eat a high fiber diet such as wheat bread and cereals like Raisin Bran. These solutions are not fast acting and normally take 2-3 days to solve the problem.

oh i've had that since i was a child and i thought it was normal...i'm 17 and this summer i told myself i have to do something after i didn't have a bowel movement for 8 DAYS!!!
you have to eat stuff that has a lot of fibres in them...you can eat figs...or dates...especially when they're dry the concentration of fibres is very high
i always eat dates ..a few dates every 2 or 3 days...once you're out of the constipation phase..it will be harder to get back in
and of course eat a lot of fruits and vegetables..like apples
and drink a lot of water of course, because your body needs to absorb the water to make the food it digests go through the stomache more smoothly

Try not drinking fluids with your meals. It will help not solidify the um.. bowel movement? Don't drink 20 mins before and after. That really helps with your digestive system. Also, the more obvious one is to eat high fiber meals. I have noticed there are a lot of high fiber cereals out there. Cut back on dairy foods except yogurt.

dont freak out by means of my solutions. i'm simply telling what i do know. alternating constipation and diarrhoea is usually a signal of ileocaecal Tuberculosis. however so much on the whole its because of typhoid and different enteric fevers. so kindly do a widal scan or a blood tradition

go to your pharmacy, get a bottle of docusate sodium. It is stool softener, it will draw water from your body into the bowel and keep the stool softer, but you also need to increase your fluid intake. The mature body requires a minimum of two liters of fluid a day.

Trying using anal beads on a regular basis this usually loosens up the stool and if that isn't enough to get you on the band wagon it's all very stimulating during intercourse.
